Jean caught on immediately after I dodged her questions twice.
“Soren’s next to you, isn’t he? So now isn’t a good time to talk about this?” she asked.
“Mm–hmm.”
“Oh, okay. Gotcha. You two go ahead. We’ll talk when you’re free.”
“Alright.” Just as I was about to hang up, I remembered my business trip and quickly added, “We’ll have to wait until after the Brigidlia Festival. I’m leaving for Medhelanon tomorrow.”
Jean had been so busy that she’d forgotten, but my reminder jogged her memory.
“You’re spending another Brigidlia Festival abroad? I’m sure that’s really difficult for you now that you’ve got a boyfriend. You can’t do this again next year.”
I chuckled and replied, “We’ll see…”
After all, who knew if my boyfriend would still be mine next year?
After hanging up, I instinctively checked my WhatsApp messages and replied to a few work–related ones.
“Taylor, my family’s opinion isn’t that important. No matter what they think, I can make my own decisions. Trust me.”
Soren’s low, steady voice resonated through the car as he drove.
I turned to him and teased, “Do you have dog ears or something? How’s your hearing so sharp?”
The car was filled with music, and I hadn’t put my phone on speaker. Besides, I had taken the call while facing the window.
Yet there was no way he could have overheard our conversation, and still he pinpointed the topic with uncanny
accuracy.
Soren smiled. “Don’t you think my feelings for you would be too shallow if I didn’t understand you this much?”
I pressed my lips together, thinking for a moment before speaking solemnly. “Soren, let’s love each other as freely as we can while we’re together, with no regrets. Then, when it’s time to part, we’ll do it cleanly and with dignity, okay?”
“No.” He rejected the idea outright, glancing at me. “Unless there’s a real issue–like if you stop loving me or if I stop loving you–I won’t accept any other reason for breaking up.”
“So you’d go against your family for me?”
“It won’t come to that. I’ll handle it.”
His tone remained composed and reassuring, though I couldn’t imagine how he’d convince his family.
Maybe he could deal with Lisbeth, but what about William?
William had already made it clear that he wanted to maintain his ties with his old comrade and former subordinate through marriage.
Then there was Candy, shamelessly waiting for him to turn to her.
A tangle of concerns filled my mind, leaving me restless:

When we arrived at the restaurant, Soren and I sat on one side while Jamie dar across from us.
During the meal, Soren ignored Jamie entirely, fussing over me and making sure I are enough.
When I accidentally got some dipping sauce on the corner of my mouth, he even fetched a warm towel to wipe it off.
I dared not look at Jamie. I feared he might suddenly stand and storm off, complaining he’d already eaten his fill
In the end, I nudged Soren under the table to signal him to rein it in–and he complied, though it redirected his attention to Jamie instead.
“Mr. Young, please take care of Taylor while you two are away on your business trip. My work is demanding, and 1 won’t be able to accompany her,” he said politely and sincerely, as if entrusting me to Jamie’s care.
I almost rolled my eyes as I brought more food for Soren and said, “Hurry up and eat–you haven’t had much yet. The food here is really fresh today, so enjoy it while it’s hot.
Soren smiled and pointed toward Jamie with his chin. “You shouldn’t just serve me, Taylor. Give Mr. Young some food as well.”
