1 suddenly recalled something when Soren said that, and it made me sit up and look at him.
“What’s wrong?” He looked surprised.
I grabbed his arm and said gravely, “The Kennedys do have skeletons in their closet. I remember overhearing Edward talking to his father about how they greased a lot of palms while working on the Aesgard project. There was even a safety incident, but they managed to cover it up
I had come across that conversation by chance. Edward had never mentioned it to me directly, but the memory of it had made me uneasy for a long time.
Later, I tried to subtly bring it up, but he brushed me off with some half–baked excuse. Since the project had ended with overwhelmingly positive feedback, I figured maybe I’d been overthinking and let it go.
“Soren, have your people look into that project. I’m sure you’ll find something incriminating,” I urged.
At that moment, I wasn’t even thinking about the chain reaction this could cause. All I knew was that Edith shouldn’t get away with her crimes–and that Soren and Soleil shouldn’t have to suffer injustice with no way to fight back.
I didn’t care what might happen to me. However, I couldn’t accept dragging them down with me.
Soren took my hand, his expression a mix of surprise and something softer. “Do you realize what could happen if we actually dig up solid evidence against them?”
“Worst case? The Kennedys go bankrupt,” I replied without hesitation.
“And you still want me to investigate?” he asked, raising an eyebrow.
I smiled bitterly. “They didn’t show me an ounce of mercy before. Why should I go easy on them now?
“Besides, I’ve already been enough of a burden to you. I won’t let you suffer because of me, so I’ll stand by you and see this through.”
Soren’s smile deepened with quiet amusement. He reached out and brushed his fingers gently across my cheek. ” Finally, you’re learning ”

“In the past, you kept shutting me out. You never let me be part of anything. But now… you’re finally willing to stand beside me,” he said.
I thought back to what Soleil had said over lunch.
Still moved, I spoke from the heart. “I was wrong before. I shouldn’t have tried to draw a line between us. If we’re together, we should act like it.”
Soren looked at me for a long moment, then pulled me into his arms.
Unexpectedly, he murmured, “You’re really not making this any easier for me.”
I looked up at him, puzzled. “What do you mean?”
“We’re about to be apart for a while,” he said, his voice low and warm. “And then you go and say something like that. How am I supposed to let you go now?”
He leaned down, brushing his nose lightly against mine.

Soren chuckled and leaned in to kiss me anyway. “No need to be shy. There’s no one here I don’t trust.”

While checking in, I noticed Soren had changed my seat, upgrading me from economy, where I was supposed to be sitting with my team.
“It’s a long flight, and economy is cramped,” Soren explained when he saw my confused expression. “Sean booked his ticket later, and economy was already full, so you’re both in first class.
I knew he meant well, but guilt tugged at me. “But I’ll stand out too much.”
Without missing a beat, he said, “Then I’ll upgrade everyone.”
“That won’t be necessary, Mr. Kenway,” Cherry cut in with teasing grin, having overheard us. “We all know you just want Miss Jones to be comfortable.”
The rest of the team chuckled in agreement.
“Cherry’s right, Miss Jones,” someone added. “Enjoy first class. Don’t worry about us.”
