I could tell he was trying to control how much he missed me with all these people around. I felt the same way, too.

I chuckled. “Some of my colleagues bring instant noodles with them.”
“Did you do that?” Soren asked.
“No. I don’t really care about food. As long as I’m fed, I’m content.”
I’d gotten used to the neglect in the Jones family. All I ever ate was leftovers, or sometimes nothing at all. I was never given a choice.
To me, even though foreign cuisine wasn’t what I was used to, at least it was prepared with fresh ingredients. That was already better than what I grew up with
Soren’s eyes filled with pain. “That’s because you didn’t have a choice back then. Now, you’re different. You can demand better. You should.”
“I am,” I joked. “I owe someone a gazillion bucks, but I’ve been eating well every day. I’ve even gotten our bonus from last year. I haven’t paid you back yet because I’ve been busy, but don’t worry! I’ll take care of it after this.”
Soren sighed. “Is it really that urgent to you? It feels like I came all the way to Medhelanon just to collect debt, and you’re rushing to get rid of me.”

I smiled. “I know that’s not why you’re here. And I’m sure you’re rich enough not to worry about money! But… I feel bad. I just want to clear my debt as soon as possible. I want to be free.”
I liked the thought of being free from my debt. It would take the weight off my shoulders.

After setting down his fork and spoon, he met my gaze with a serious expression. “Now that we’re together and we truly love each other, I think I have a role to play as the man. I should take on more for my girlfriend, don’t you think?”

“Remember your mother’s bracelet? Let’s treat that as my love token for you. You don’t need to worry about paying your debt anymore,” he said solemnly.
