Chapter 400
I bade them farewell and headed out of the corridor.
That was when I felt a sharp clap on my shoulder. I turned and stared directly at his face, a blotchy red flag of rage.
A bad feeling washed over me. “Edward! Why are y-”
Before I could finish, he stepped forward and covered my mouth–not with his hand, but with a handkerchief.
A rush of thoughts surged through me: Drugs to knock me gut! A rape attempt! Murder!
My hatred for Edward had festered to the point where only the most uncharitable, malicious Ideas came to mind. They felt right, somehow.
Within seconds, everything turned dark.
I opened my eyes..
Darkness surrounded me.
Where was I?
I tried to move, only to realize my limbs were bound.
“You’re up already? That’s sooner than I thought.”
I recognized that voice, and that was enough to make my skin crawl and my hair stand on end. It was right beside
- me.
Had he been there the entire time I was unconscious? Had he done something to me as some twisted form of revenge?
I writhed, desperate to escape and get away from that voice
Then I heard a click. Suddenly, the world came into focus,
I squinted against the blinding light.
“Want some water? You had quite a few drinks just now. I bet you’re thirsty.”
Before I could even get my bearings, Edward had already brought a glass of water to my lips.
I turned my head away, glaring at him coldly. “Do you have a death wish, Edward? Seriously, kidnapping now?! It’s illegal, and you’re never getting away with this.”
“No? You don’t want water?” Edward asked, ignoring my anger.
He glanced at the glass before meeting my eyes again. “You’re worried that I spiked it, aren’t you? Don’t be scared. I didn’t.‘
He pushed the glass toward me, but I ducked.
I didn’t care if the drink was spiked or not. I wasn’t about to accept anything from him.
I had no idea what time it was or where I was, but I knew one thing for certain: Soren would use every resource at his disposal to find me, and he’d do it fast.
He would be here soon.

“What is wrong with you, Edward? Your family is in crisis! What kind of heir abandons his duties, chasing after some love affair? And to pull this off abroad? Do you even care about anything important anymore?”
I was trying to appeal to his sense of reason before he did something even more irreparable.

Instead, he set the glass down and snickered, dismissing my words. He sat on the edge of the bed, reaching
toward me.
I tried to move away, but my limbs were bound. His fingers grazed my cheek gently, as though I were an artwork he had long admired.
“I never thought I’d go this crazy over you,” he confessed.
I said nothing. Goddamn it, I wasn’t interested.
“You’ve always been the one trying to get my attention since we were kids. I thought you’d never leave me, no matter what I did.”
I snickered to myself. So this was why he thought he could get away with everything–the crazy antics, like using our wedding preparations to marry Maddison. He believed I was so charmed by him that nothing would make me leave.
He thought I’d always forgive him and stay clinging to him.
“I didn’t expect you to be so angry just because I let Maddison pretend to be marrying me. You were so furious that you left and wouldn’t come back,” he said, his tone oddly reflective.
Something in his expression changed. “It wasn’t until you left that I realized I couldn’t live without you. But you… You wouldn’t give me a second chance.”
