Chapter 412
“There will be some really bad press waiting for you when you get back to Metropolis, dear. Please be prepared,” my aunt warned.
“I know. But I’ll come visit you and Grandma the day after tomorrow!”
“Don’t push yourself too hard, sweetie. Grandma knows you’ve been busy with work. She’d rather you get some rest first.”
“Thanks, Aunt Sarah. Bye.”
I turned to Soren and sighed. “The Kennedys must have known you were behind this investigation and that you were doing it for me.”
Soren played with my fingers as I spoke, prompting me to pull my hand away from his and clap him on the back.” Did you hear me?”
“I did. Don’t worry. Everything’s going according to plan. Besides, I wasn’t the one who wanted to investigate them. The government did that because they broke the law.
“I’m just an upstanding citizen who reported potential corruption and crime, as any citizen should. I didn’t do anything wrong,” he replied cheerfully.
I knew he was right, but the Kennedys were nothing if not a pack of rabid dogs. Who knew what they’d do next?
After more than ten hours of flying, we finally arrived home.
The Brigidlia Festival was nearly over. As soon as we landed, Soren got a call from his family and answered with just a few words.
When the call ended, he said, “I need to go home for a bit. I’ll send you home first.”
“Is your grandfather not feeling well?”
“Not sure. But Grandpa insisted I come home now.”
“Got it. In that case, you don’t have to drive me.”
“I’m in no rush.”
He took my hand. We waved at my coworkers and Jean before rushing off.
On the ride, I started to feel sleepy.
Soren pulled me into his arms and asked, “Stay at my place, please? I’ll visit my family home for a while before coming back to you. Your place is too far away.”
I frowned. “But Bullet’s at home. He’s probably really bored. I know you arranged for a dog sitter to take him on walks, but he’s still going to be lonely.”
He frowned. “Oops. I forgot about your son. That’s fine. Bullet can stay at my villa too!”
I met his eyes and smiled. “Is this really necessary? We’ve been together for days… It should be okay to spend just one night apart.”
He couldn’t resist kissing me. “Not enough. I don’t want to be separated from you, even for a second… Please. Say yes.”

Ever since we’d been intimate, Soren had become increasingly clingy, and I, for my part, had become weaker and weaker at putting my foot down..
“Okay. I mean, yes.”
“Nice! Okay, go take a nap. I’ll wake you when we’re there.
He patted my shoulder.and allowed me to settle more comfortably into his chest.
As promised, Soren woke me up when we arrived at his lakeside villa. He also handed me a whole list of instructions.
“I’m fine. I can take care of myself. You need to go home!” replied urgently.
What would his family think if he was late? He’d even spent a few days abroad just for me! I hoped Lisbeth wasn’t upset about that.
He laughed, hugging and kissing me before pinching my ears. “Can you at least pretend you need me sometimes? Even just a little?”
I shot him a shocked look. It seemed all men were the same! They really wanted their partners to rely on them to feel good about themselves.
Soren left.
I scanned the villa and, honestly? I didn’t like it all that much.
