Chapter 415
Cameron ranted on and on, delivering a tirade I didn’t even want to hear. I pulled the phone away from my ear as her voice continued, relentless and grating.
I only brought the phone back to my ear once I sensed she was finally done.
“The Kennedys are a crime family. They should be prosecuted for their offenses–whoever initiated this investigation did the right thing,” I said. “As for Harry… Well, if he colluded with the Kennedys in any of these crimes, he should be brought to justice as well.
“What baffles me about you people is your ridiculous tendency to spin lies. The real criminals, the ones who should be condemned, somehow get framed as innocent, while the actual victims and righteous agents are treated like criminals. You’re all insane, do you know that?”
“Oh, you’re giving me a lecture now because you’ve got a powerful backer! You want to ruin our lives and take down the Kennedys too! You bitch!” Cameron barked. “God will punish you for your sins!”
I’d heard it all before, so much that my brain had learned to filter it out.
“Yeah, yeah. Great story, boomer. Anyway, I’ve got things to do, so I’m hanging up now. By the way, since my dad’s out of the hospital, I don’t have to pay anything anymore.”
You can’t do that! You can’t! What if your dad-”
I ended the call and walked to the dining room.
The table was covered with several thermal containers. I opened them and found a variety of breakfasts, which I arranged on the table.
By the time I finished, Soren came down the stairs.
“You had someone deliver this in the early morning?” I asked.
“Yeap. This restaurant makes the best breakfast. Everything’s fresh out of the oven. Go ahead, take a bite!” he said affectionately.
I was starving and immediately sat down, digging into the food.
“So, was that your stepmother?” Soren asked.
“Yeap. My deadbeat father got taken away by the police, so she was worried he might be arrested again,” I replied flatly.
I hoped Harry would end up back in prison, preferably with an even harsher sentence. My mom and grandfather would only feel at peace if he died behind bars.
“I don’t know much about his criminal dealings with the Kennedys, but if you want, I can have someone look into it,” he offered.
“It’s not a big deal. That would work. I just want to know if it adds to his current charges.”
“Got it.”
I ate so heartily that the dining room fell into silence.
At one point, I glanced at Soren and realized I should ask him about the Kenways. It only seemed fair.
Soren caught my look and smiled. “What? Something on my face?”

I ignored his joke and asked, “Why did they summon you home so suddenly last night?”
His expression faltered briefly before he replied with unexpected honesty, “Well, Grandpa wasn’t happy about me going abroad for you. He made it clear that he doesn’t approve of us being together.”
He smiled bitterly. “He said it wasn’t about your personality–it was about your family… and your history with the Kennedys.
“He knew I was the one who started the investigation into the Kennedys, though. He was okay with that. He understood I was doing it for justice and the law.
“What he meant was that as this thing grows, your past with the family, and with Edward, will come up again. And given our relationship, people will think I’m doing it for you, that it’s all about a woman. That would stain our reputation.”
“So he wants us to break up?” I asked, getting straight to the point.
Soren nodded. “Yes. He said it’s the best way to protect you. But I disagree. I think I can protect you best when * you’re by my side.”
