Emily shuffled nervously. “I just noticed that Janie’s tent is really big and nice. I was thinking maybe… I could crash there for the night?”
Jackson laughed in exasperation, “You’ve got to be kidding me?
Emily’s face flushed, and her voice took on an even softer tone. “I didn’t mean to offend. It’s just her tent looks like it could fit another person.”
She turned her attention to Janie. “What do you think, Janie? Could I stay with you just for tonight?”
[Emily really thought she had a shot at this? Girl, read the room.]

Janie stopped, finally turning to look at Emily. “What Jackson said goes for me too.”
Emily’s face fell, but she pressed on. “So… that’s a no? I just thought, with all that extra space…”
Janie’s expression didn’t change, but her tone became icier. “This tent was set up for me by Jackson. No one else is stepping foot inside.
Janie continued. And for the record, sharing a tent is something I’d only do with someone I trust. We’re not friends. In fact, I don’t even like you. So, no, it’s not happening.”
The
final blow was swift. “Your request isn’t just bold–it’s ridiculous.”
With that, Janie turned and walked away.
Jackson smirked, his mood immediately improving. That’s my girl, he thought.
Whistling under his breath, Jackson headed for his own tent, his grin so wide it could rival the moon.

Ryan and Zion barely looked her way. Already sour from the day’s events, their patience had completely evaporated.
Without a word, they disappeared into their tents.
Inside those tents? Who knew. Whatever frustrations they were nursing, the outside world wouldn’t be privy to it.
Emily’s sadness shifted to quiet resentment as she muttered curses under her breath.
Xena glanced around and realized they were the last ones left standing: her, Jason, and the still–sniveling Emily.
Emily let out another soft sob. “It’s all my fault. I didn’t have enough money for a tent, and now no one likes me.
Jason rubbed his temples, his patience hanging by a thread. He’d already used Xena’s money to buy a tent but hadn’t finished setting it up.
The last thing he wanted was to share it with Emily and figure out another sleeping arrangement for himself. What if she actually agreed? He’d be stuck freezing all night.
“I’ll go set up the tent now,” Jason mumbled, backing away before anyone could stop him.
