My heart is thundering in my chest, only to stop as the next words are uttered. “You look quite good pressed to the tree. The laugh that follows is too familiar. And I know it doesn’t belong to him. I grunt as I manage to shift my hand, and I hear a curse when I jab my elbow back. The hand holding mine to the tree falls and I slam my back into the body behind me before lowering my head. I quickly turn, raising my hand to punch his throat, but he catches my list and glares at me with dark eyes.
Rio stands before me with his nostrils flared and warning edged to his voice. “You don’t want to do that again”
I don’t listen. I use my other hand to punch his side, and he hisses as he grabs the hand, too. He forces both hands behind me and I gasp when he yanks me forward, my chest brushing against his. Rio laughs when he notices where my eyes are and he starts to say. “You’re not getting out of ” he doesn’t get to finish his words as I bump my forehead into his and I wince at the pain that spreads through me but it’s worth it because Rio loses his clasp on me as he staggers back.

I’m quick to grab the daggers and I take several steps back as I wait for him to regain composure. He tries after he rubs his forehead a few times and the look in his eyes when he lifts his gaze sends a chill down my spine. It scares me because I know how Rio is, but I grip my daggers tight and when he takes a step forward, I extend my right hand. The intent is to slash him across his face, but Rio grabs my wrist before the dagger can touch his skin and he growls, his eyes flashing blue as his wolf comes to the surface. My breathing trembles when I see the fangs as he opens his mouth and 1 move my second hand fast, stabbing it across his side.

I twist my hand until he loses his grip on me and I lower my body as I swipe my leg forward. He trips over my foot and falls, but before he touches the ground, he takes me with him and he flips us halfway through so my back is to the ground and he’s on top of me. He wraps a hand around throat to keep my neck down and uses the second hand to pin my hands over my head. When he has me right where he wants–Incapable of pulling more moves other than jerking my outstretched legs–he smiles wickedly.

The rustling of leaves interrupts his words and when Rio’s head lifts to check who or what is approaching, I use the chance to bump my head into his. When his body falls back. I knee his middle and his groan is loud as he trips to the side.
I move to my feet just as Elijali emerges from the trees and his gaze is suspecting as he looks between me and Rio, “Emma”
“He touched me. Got me down.” I tell him as I grab my daggers while Rio struggles to get on his feet. When Elijah gets to my side, he asks, “Did something happen!”
“Nedung,” I mumble. “He was just bring an asshole, as always.” I don’t wait another second before walking in the direction that leads back to the pack house, and I hear Elijah’s footsteps behind me.

Chapter 56
My frown deepens, and I curse myself for even thinking it was him. For getting excited when I thought he chased after me. I curse myself for hating that none of those were true–for wishing it had been.
THREE WEEKS LATER-
It’s been three weeks since Rose arrived, and she’s still here. Ethan left the night he said he’d and we had one last chat before we departed.
Three weeks since the announcement of his engagement and even when I try to escape it–I can’t. He’s everywhere. They’re everywhere, Rose clings to him every second of the day and she does well at flaunting she’s the woman who gets to be by his side.
I wish I could say it doesn’t hurt as much anymore. I can’t because that’d be a lie. It hurts just as much as when I found out and just as much as when I told him to leave my room the night he ended what was between us brutally
I miss him. I hate him. I don’t want to see him. I dream of him. I want to escape the thoughts of him in my head. I hug my pillow every night, wishing his scent lasted longer than it did.

The day of their engagement draws nearer and, as it comes close. Rose marks her position. She’s respected and referred to as the to–be Luna while my bitterness grows and that only makes me feel worse because she’s kind. She smiles at anyone and everyone and we might have been close if I didn’t hold an anger towards her every time I see him with her.
