Chapter 29
Bramwell glanced at Evalina and nodded. “If you want to do it, go ahead.”
Olive perked right up. She bounced up and headed to the kitchen. She knew the way to a man’s heart was through his stomach, and it worked for any dude, especially the older ones.
She’d been working on her cooking skills for this day, focusing on Bramwell’s faves. She was confident he’d dig what she whipped up. “Need a hand?” Evalina asked, feeling a bit awkward just sitting there.
But Bramwell pulled Evalina away. “Nah, come on. Let’s play some chess. If you don’t, I’ll be left without an opponent.” Olive, felt like she was about to lose her mind. This just made her feel like she was there to be a glorified babysitter.
Hugo sighed and followed Olive into the kitchen, “Let me help you out!
Olive looked at Hugo with clear eyes. “Hugo… it seems like your grandpa really digs Evalina.”
Hugo rolled his eyes. “She’s always hanging around with him, so of course he likes her. Don’t stress; it takes time.”
“Yep, I know…” Olive replied, feeling a twinge of jealousy. But her thoughts were not so friendly. What’s so great about Evalina? Probably just all the buttering up she does. Thankfully, Hugo’s still on my side.
Hugo watched as Olive finished cooking up a storm, and the dishes looked mouthwatering
Olive was pretty pleased with herself and looked up. “Whaddya think, Hugo? How’d 1 do
“No worries, it looks awesome. Grandpa’s gonna love it. Hugo encouraged.
Hearing this, Olive felt even more confident. “Go get him for dinner, will ya?”
Hugo was still in the hallway when he heard the ruckus coming from the study. Sounds of a chess game, complete with animated banter, floated out
“Hey, that move? No way I’m sticking with it, Bramwell was saying, his voice booming.
“Come on, Bramwell, you can’t take it back. What’s done is done, Evalina retorted.
“I can’t help it. You got me all confused, Bramwell complained.
“Hey, it’s all part of the game, Evalina chimed in.
Bramwell smiled, “No, I’ll take it back.”

Huge stepped into the study and saw Bramwell and Evalina, their faces all red and excited, totally engrossed in the game. “Hey, Grandpa, dinner’s on the table. Let’s take a break and eat, Hugo said casually.
“Eat? I haven’t won a single game today. I can’t just walk away,” Bramwell insisted.
“Really?” Hugo was shocked.
Hugo glanced at Evalina, a bit puzzled. He sauntered over and took a look at the chessboard. His eyes narrowed as he studied the pieces. He then looked at Evalina, wondering if she’d been the one to set up such a tricky game.
Evalina caught his look and stepped in front of the board. “Bramwell, we can pick up where we left off after dinner. Food first, okay?” she said, trying to reason with him.
“Nope, no way” Bramwell shook his head stubbornly.
“Bramwell, you’re not gonna turn this game around. Let’s get so

Bramwell just pouted, clearly not happy about the idea of leaving the
Olive poked her head in, looking a bit out of place. “Hey, Bramwell,” she said softly, “I made your favorite onion rings. You should try them before diving back into that chess game.
