Chapter 46
Olive watched Hugo bustling around the kitchen and let out a breath she didn’t know she was holding
Hugo wasn’t one for doting, but he did it for her. The baby bump kept them at arm’s length for now, but Olive was itching to find a way to bridge that gap
The baby was past the three–month mark, and she was ready to get back to normal. But Hugo’s overprotectiveness was becoming a
hurdle.
At the office, Walden heard Evalina mention she’d smoothed things over with Hugo. He raised an eyebrow. “How’d you swing that?”
Evalina chuckled nervously. Just fessed up like he wanted.” She wasn’t about to reveal the real reason Hugo had backed down–she threatened and forced him.
“Just by apologizing?” Walden looked skeptical.
Yeah, what else do you think I could have done?” Evalina shrugged, playing it cool.
Walden shook his head. “Hugo’s not the type to let an apology slide”
“Anyway, don’t get all bent outta shape Evalina said, trying to lighten the mood.
“But he hasn’t said for sure he’s not pulling the investment. We should have never taken his money in the first place. Didn’t think it’d turn into such a cluster and leave us so stuck,” Walden griped
“Hey, take a chill pill… I’ll hit Hugo up. He’s probably just swamped and forgot, Evalina offered.
She was thinking. “Hugo said he’d lay off our project. So why hasn’t he gotten back to Walden? Is he dragging his feet or what?‘
“Call him? When’d you get his number?” Walden asked, curious.
Evalina paused, and then said, “Snagged it when I apologized. Figured it was a good time to get it.”
Evalina’s fingers flew over her phone as she searched for Hugo’s number, her eyes darting away from the “ex” label.
The call connected, and she cut in before Hugo could even start to rant, “Hey, Mr. Hayes, remember that thing you said you’d do for
me: You-
A sugary voice floated through the line “Hugo, who’s on the line? Those eggs you whipped up are to die for. They’re gonna get cold if you don’t dig in”
Must be cooking for Olive again. What a catch he is,” Evalina smirked and muttered under her breath
“Evalina, what’s the deal now?” Hugo snapped, clearly not in the mood for chitchat
Evalina thought in anger, “Well, that doesn’t sound polite. Looks like I messed with someone’s date.
Evalma’s voice rose with a hint of irritation. “Mr. Hayes, you’re a man of your word, right? You wouldn’t go back on what we talked about earlier, would you? I mean, we were practically nose to nose in that meeting room. You should’ve heard me loud and clear,”
She knew Olive was on the other end, listening in
There was a beat of silence, and then Hugo growled, “Evalina, have I been too easy on you lately?”
Evalina snorted. “Mr. Hayes, backing out now? C’mon, don’t play dumb.”
He shouted, “Yeah, I’m backing out. If you want it so bad, come beg for it. Not in some meeting room, but right at my feet.
Evalina rolled her eyes. “It’s not even dark yet, and you’re already dreaming big. Mr. Hayes.”
“Suit yourself then. Just watch Walden’s company go down in flames like the O’Donnell family dil” Click. Hugo was gone. Evalina let out a slow breath and turned to see Walden gawking at her, his mouth hanging open.
