Chapter 48
Hugo admitted to himself that Evalina had really gotten him riled up. Not a great place to be
Hey, Hugo, simmer down, Jasper said, clapping him on the back. “Evalina’s all bluster. She’s just a secretary now, scraping by. It shows how rough she’s got it.”
Hugo’s face was still redder than a ripe tomato and Jasper tried to change the subject. “But here’s the kicker. I checked that email IP we
Turns out it wasn’t foreign at all.”
Hugo’s eyes narrowed. “So, we got duped?”
“Bingo.” Jasper replied. “That IP’s local, right here in our own city
or was it Fate!”
Hugo let out a low chuckle. “This just got juicy. Was it Walden pulling the wool over our eyes, or was it
“Could be both are in cahoots. Ever since we put out the word we were looking for Fate, everyone’s been on the edge of their seat Once Fate sends those designs, we might just get some real answers, replied Jasper
“Did we cut the check? Hugo asked.
*3 million sent and delivered. We’re just waiting on the goods now,
“Right, track down this designer. 1 wanna see what he’s really cooking up”
This whole mess helped Hugo shake off his earlier frustration.
He thought, “Evalina’s nothing special. Without me, she’s just another face in the crowd. I don’t need to let her get to me. It’s just that it’s been a while since anyone has the guts to stand up to me, and I momentarily lost my cool.
——
Hugo pulled up and spotted Evalina hanging around his front door. His face, just starting to unwind, tightened right back up. His expression soured as Evalina came over.
“Hey, you’re back,” Evalina said, forcing a smile that felt all wrong on her face.
“What do you want?” Hugo dodged her hand, clearly not in the mood to see her. He was about to head inside when Evalina spoke up.
“Look, Hugo, I’m here to talk about our divorce. This dragging on isn’t doing us any favors. Don’t you want to just wrap this up?” Evalina. reminded herself it was all for Walden, to make things right, and she’d suck it up.
Hugo stopped in his tracks. He turned to Evalina, his face flat. “There’s no way I’m giving you any amount you ask for. I’m not a fool.”
Evalina thought, ‘What a cheapskate.
“Can we talk about this inside?” she asked, slipping past Hugo when he wasn’t looking
Hugo watched as Evalina squeezed in with a cheeky grin and tried to slip away. He quickly grabbed her.collar. “Evalina! You didn’t have permission to come in”
“Whoa, your Bowers are looking pretty wilted over here. Let me check them out Evalina said, wriggling free and heading further inside.
“Evalina” Hugo shouted, as pissed off as always
Evalina marched right in, chatting away like she owned the place, “Man, these people really phoned it in on the cleaning, huh? Knowing how much you late messes, but this table’s a mess.
“And look at this fridge–none of your favorite snacks. It’s been ages since I cooked for you, right? Forgot how good my food is? Maybe I should jog your memory?”
Hugo was at a loss for words
