Chapter 20
I stomped over to her, feeling red in the face. She looked startled to see me heading in her direction. She fixed her dress and straightened her stance, giving me a fake smile as I approached her.
“You can stop the act,” I muttered as I stopped in front of her.
She frowned and narrowed her eyes at me.
“I’m not sure I know what you mean,” she said with a huff.
“What did he put in this drink?” I asked.
She looked at the glass and then back at me with a sly grin.
“I’m not sure,” she said, but I wasn’t buying it. She even sounded fake. “I think you’re just paranoid. Not everybody is out to get you.”
“No, but I know you both are,” I muttered. “Tell me the truth, Emily. Or it’ll be your job in jeopardy.”
I saw the color draining from her features as I threatened to fire her. I would have fired her for her wrongdoings in the past, but the shareholders only agreed to demote her. I couldn’t go against their wishes; I would have to address them before actually firing Emily. But I was still her boss, and I wouldn’t feel sorry about firing her.
“It’s meant to kill your wolf,” she finally muttered.
Without thinking about it, I took the wine and splashed it in her face. She stumbled backward startled at my quick motion and reddening features. The wine was not only all over her perfectly done face, but all over her elegant gown as well.
“You little bitch!” Emily hissed as she lunged toward me; I went to dodge out of her way but then two bodies were in front of me, shielding me from Emily’s wrath.
I gasped as Sean and Joseph stood before me. Neither of them paid attention to one another, but they were staring at Emily with death stares. She trembled as she took a step away from them.
“How dare you come after my Anna,” Sean hissed to her. “Who do you think you are?”
“I…I…” she tried to defend herself, but she was having trouble coming up with the words to say.
“You are pathetic,” joseph muttered.
My heart was beating heavily in my chest.
What were they doing? What was Joseph doing?
I wanted to tell them both to stop and that I can handle it on my own. But they looked so furious, and Emily was so frightened.
“Security is on its way,” Sean announced to her.
“Please,” Emily begged.
They both looked like they wanted to laugh; before anyone could say anything more, Security already arrived and was dragging her out of the party. I looked across the party and saw Cher eyeing me; he had an angry expression on his face, and I couldn’t help but smirk at his failed plan.
“Are you okay?” Sean asked softly.
I nodded, trying to keep a strong composure.
“Yes,” I answered, confidently and unbothered.
He gave me a reassuring smile as he headed in the direction, they dragged Emily. I looked over at Joseph who was staring at me with something I didn’t recognize in his eyes. I was about to walk away when I heard him speaking.
Why did you choose such a dangerous life?” Joseph asked. I turned back to him with a frown, not sure what he was referring to. “You used to live a simple life as a housewife. Now you are being attacked at parties. You are constantly in the limelight, which is something you’ve always hated. Why choose this kind
of life?”
“We are divorced, Joseph. How I live my life is no concern of yours. I’d appreciate it if you just stayed away from me going forward,” I told him as I brushed past him.

Joseph didn’t bother me for the rest of the evening; in fact, I’m pretty sure he left shortly after we spoke. It didn’t matte: though; I had to get him out of my head. I just wanted to start fresh without him. Thinking about him was too painful and it wasn’t doing me any good.
I also didn’t want to hold too much of a grudge against Emily; the company valued her. She’s been around for a long time. My job was going to be hers before I came into the picture. So, I couldn’t blame her too much for hating me. However, she was in cahoots with a major shareholder, and together they were trying to get me out.
The morning after the party, I went down to the security office to see Emily. She was sitting in a holding cell; her eyes were bloodshot, and her face was reddened as she’s been crying. I didn’t feel bad to see her sitting in a jail cell. I stopped in front of her and folded my arms across my chest.
“I got them to release you,” I muttered, staring down at her. Her eyes widened and she scrambled to her feet, wiping her face with the back of her sleeve. “But enough with these pointless tricks, Emily. I mean it.”
There was a flash of resentment and hatred in her eyes as she looked at me. I knew there was probably a lot she wanted to say, but she was holding her tongue. I could smell the hatred she was portraying, and it gave me a chill down my spine.
I knew at that moment, that she wasn’t going to give up that easily.
