“Arch” The pain is killing me. Caleb gritted his teeth. “Gabrielle, you lowlife… I’ll make sure you pay for this sooner or later.”
He reached out to grab his phone, opening the location tracking app. However, the moment he tapped the screen, he felt a burning sensation at his fingertips. He froze in place.
As he gazed at the phone screen, under his watchful eyes, it suddenly exploded with a bang.
“Argh“” A grunt of pain escaped from Caleb as his hand was forcefully jerked back by the blast. He could only feel his fingertips singed, as if his skin had been burnt through. He held up his pained hand, the sensation of relentless throbbing pain piercing through his heart.
His body swayed a few times. As an explosion had erupted within the elevator, water from the nearby fire trigger sprayed toward him
He hissed in pain as a wave of dizziness hit him, forcing him to stumble backward and collapse onto the ground. The elevator fell silent in an instant. He scrambled up in surprise and reached out to press the button.
“D’mn‘ The elevator has stopped Caleb couldn’t believe his eyes as the elevator plunged into darkness.
All the buttons were unresponsive, and his mind was a blank slate. He hadn’t expected that simply tapping on that location= tracking app. curious to see if it still worked, would lead to that.
As luck would have it, the phone exploded, and of all places, it happened inside the elevator. That triggered the elevator’s explosion detection system, causing an immediate power cul
“Is anyone out there? Caleb asked urgently.
He hastily reached out, repeatedly hitting the edges of the elevator and pressing the twenty–four–hour alarm button, all to no
avail
“F*ck” Caleb couldn’t help but curse.
An inexplicable fear welled up within him as he was trapped in the pitch–black elevator, Visions of Gabrielle kept surfacing in his mind, and he recalled how she handled danger on the deserted island with such fluid grace.
“Gabrielle, save me..” He instinctively called Gabrielle on the phone.
To his dismay, he found that his phone had no signal. That finally sent Caleb into a panic. He frantically slapped the elevator door over and over, but all was quiet outside. He then collapsed onto the floor in despair.
Caleb never imagined that a trip to the hospital would land him in such a situation. It’s like encountering someone from the Seaters family till surely bring along a streak of bad luck!
At that moment, he somewhat regretted going to the hospital.
Chloe’s face kept appearing vividly in Caleb’s mind, causing an inexplicable sense of panic. Afterward, he faintly heard noises from outside Just as he was about to cry out for help, he vaguely heard someone asking in a hushed tone. “Are we certain it’s this person!”
“It’s him. He has a good fortune,” a woman murmured softly
The voice was soft, hushed to a whisper, yet it made his skin crawl. It felt vaguely familiar, as if he had heard it somewhere
before
Is that Chloe What did she mean by that? Who has good fortune? Is she talking about me or someone else? Caleb’s mind raced as he realized that someone outside was prying open the elevator doors. A chill ran down Caleb’s spine, and he felt as if an invisible hand was squeezing his throat
He struggled, yearning to escape, but unfortunately, he couldn’t get out
In the next moment. the elevator doors burst o open with a loud bang.

As he fainted, he still heard her whisper softly, “Caleb, I’ve finally found you.”

No sooner had she finished speaking than he faintly felt her fingertips tracing his cheek. A shiver ran through his body, and he passed out completely.
Late at night, the study in the Zechman residence was dimly lit, with Jonathan standing alone by the floor–to–ceiling window. His dark eyes flickered as he gazed into the night, his fingers still clutching his phone. At that moment, he was deep in thought
“Is Gabrielle spending the night out?” Michael touched his nose lightly.
He gently swirled the red wine in his glass and sauntered toward Jonathan. He leaned casually against the floor–to–ceiling window, and a faint smile played on his enchanting face as he cast a glance at Jonathan.
“Do you not have anything to do?” Jonathan asked in a deep voice.
That single sentence was potent and forceful, and it carried an undercurrent of threat beneath its icy detachment.
Michael held his wine glass, taking a delicate sip as he bowed.
Michael’s heart skipped a beat, and he quickly said. “It’s not that. I initially planned to consult Gabrielle about some medical matters, but I didn’t expect her to spend the night out tonight.”
He had grown up with Jonathan since they were children, yet that was the first time he had ever seen displeasure in Jonathan’s eyes.
Jonathan was always composed, and his actions were decisive and ruthless. He seldom let his emotions show, but that night was an exception
“By the way, you’ve always had doubts about your mother marrying into the Zechman family, suspecting something was amiss. You don’t think your uncle making a move on you has anything to do with what happened to your father, do you?” Michael asked with a hint of confusion.
Matters involving the Zechman family were always handled discreetly, and Jonathan did not mention them prior.
“Before, I merely suspected that my mother’s family had ulterior motives toward the Zechman family. I initially thought it was about coveting the Zechman family’s wealth. However, ever since my mishap, Uncle Frankie has suddenly disappeared. Hence, my father’s death might not have been an accident,” Jonathan said in a hoarse voice.
Michael involuntarily tightened the hand that was holding the wine.
“Back when your father had his accident, my dad was the one who conducted the post–mortem examination. He confirmed it was indeed an accident. The surveillance at the time also showed it was a car crash, with the other party driving under the influence. The drunk driver didn’t receive any extra money either,” said Michael in a low voice.
Jonathan remained silent, his grip on the phone simply becoming tighter.
“If Uncle Frankie could make a move against me, it implies he wouldn’t have allowed my father to live. So, my father’s death. seemingly normal, might have been orchestrated by someone. Let’s keep this matter to ourselves for now. My grandfather is of advanced age and can’t handle any shock,” Jonathan said in a hoarse voice.
Michael nodded before downing the red wine in his glass in one go.
“Don’t worry. I know what to do. Once I get back, I’ll subtly ask my dad about the autopsy he performed. I’ll take a look at the report, Michael said.
No sooner had he finished speaking than he saw Jonathan turn and walk toward the office before extending something
toward him.
“What’s this?” Michael was baffled as he casually took it
He glanced down and realized it was a medical report. A wave of confusion washed over him as he quickly skimmed through it, whispering, “Have you actually brought the report?”

Quickly setting down his wine glass, Michael picked up the autopsy report and walked over to the couch. He read through it
in detail.
“A car accident had led to a sudden heart attack. The rescue was not timely, resulting in death.” Michael held the medical report between his fingertips, reading it over and over again.
“Indeed, it makes sense. If a heart attack isn’t treated promptly and there are no medications at hand, it could lead directly to death, Michael said.
Upon hearing that, Jonathan forcefully tapped his fingertips on the table.
“The crux of the matter is that my father had a heart condition and was on medication for a long time. However, on the day of the incident, he just happened not to have his medicine on him. Do you think that’s plausible?” Jonathan asked in a cold
voice.
The corners of Michael’s lips twitched as he closed the report.
“That’s truly impossible. Thus, what appeared to be a normal death could potentially be a well–planned scheme. Moreover, the person behind it could be someone close enough to reach him. Secretaries, assistants, butlers, and even your mother,” said Michael in a hushed voice.
Jonathan remained silent, slowly closing his dark eyes. Gabrielle’s words echoed endlessly in his ears.
“You must remember it’s a close kin. Other than your uncle, who else could it be?”
