Gabrielle remained silent for most of the journey, her gare fixed on the passing scenery outside the window. “Johnathan
“Hmm” The man responded in a deep voice.
He glanced at her through the rearview mirror.
“I just don’t understand. Why does it have to be me?” she asked.
This was something she couldn’t quite figure out. She was tempted to divine the answer herself, but reading one’s own fate was forbidden, not to mention unreliable when emotions clouded judgment..
“Don’t overthink it. Just focus on living well now. Leave the rest to me.” Jonathan replied, his grip steady on the steering wheel
as he took a smooth tum.
He drove with a steady hand, the car gliding smoothly along.
Gabrielle leaned against the window, her mind drifting back to her previous life–the humiliation of being forced to record that video, the certainty in their eyes that they had won.
She had died. Had Jonathan died too? She didn’t know.
But if he hadn’t, why would she have been given this second chance?
“Did Keiran go back on his own?” Gabrielle belatedly realized that Keiran wasn’t around.
After they arrived at the Zechman manor, he had disappeared. He didn’t tag along when they left either.
Hearing her question Jonathan replied coolly. “I sent him on an errand. He’ll be back later.”
Gabriele didn’t press further. The exhaustion from last night’s drinking and today’s events finally caught up with her, and
before long she dated off
She only stirred when Jonathan’s low voice roused her.
“We’re here,” Jonathan called out.
Gabrielle straightened up. Glancing at the familiar mansion, she stepped out of the car, grabbing her bag as she headed
“You’re back. Mrs. Zechman Charles greeted her warmly before noticing the men unloading boxes from the SUV
His eyes lit up. “Ah, health supplements! It seems Old Mr. Zechman took quite a liking to you.”
Then he spotted another chest. “Hmm? What’s this?”
Curious, be pried it open, only to nearly choke at the sight of an entire chest filled with gold jewelry.
“Mr. Zechman, you must see this!” he called out urgently
Still yawning Gabrielle turned back. When she saw what was inside the chest, her jaw nearly dropped in surprise. She couldnt believe what she was seeing and exclaimed, “Another box of gold jewelry?”
Charles chuckled “Old Mr. Zechman must have gifted it to you.”
Jonathan strode in just then overhearing their exchange. After handing his coat to a servant, he inspected the chest.
It’s a gift from Grandpa. Keep it

“I’ll carry it upstairs,” Jonathan said simply.

He reached out to pick up the chest, then began to ascend the staircase, with Gabrielle hastily following behind him.
He carried the chest of gold jewelry into her room and placed it on the side table. He said. “Rest for now. Michael is coming over later. If you don’t mind, we’ll have dinner with him?” he asked.
Gabrielle was fine with it and nodded. “Sure. You can make the arrangements.”
Jonathan exhaled slightly before continuing, “He’s very interested in medicine. He’s been wanting to consult you, but timing never worked out. Tonight, he might ask you some questions. Answer if you’re comfortable. Otherwise, just refuse. We grew up together, but don’t feel obliged to humor hm for my sake.”
With that, he left.
Gabrielle stared at the chest of gold in a daze. She pulled out her phone to find a message from Arthur.
Arthur: Have you reached home?
Gabrielle To
After a moment of thought, she added: Why did you give me so much jewelry?
Arthur replied: They belonged to my late wife. She always wanted to gift them to John’s future bride. Since she’s no longer here, I’m doing it for her. Hope you like them.
As she gazed at the words on the screen, she was flooded with a mix of emotions.
She replied: Thank you, Grandpa. No longer refusing them, she closed the chest and was about to move it aside when she realized it was over twenty kilograms.
She had severely underestimated its contents.
At evening, around half past six.
Michael’s Maybach pulled up to the Zechman residence. He stepped out, arms laden with takeout bags, and called out cheerfully, “Charles!”
Charles hurned over. “Yes, Mr. Lefevre
“I brought some finger food–nachos, sausage rolls, goose claws, onion rings and some chicken nuggets. Plate them for me. I’m drinking tonight!” he declared cheerfully.
Charles couldn’t contain his amusement. He remarked, “You sure have an appetite, Mr. Lefevre. These would pair quite well with drinks. However, Mr. Zechman has also ordered additional dishes.”
Curious, Michael peeked at the dining table.
He saw a spread of rotisserie chicken, butter–poached shrimps, braised short ribs, beef bourguignon, salad, grilled salmon, and boiled crabs.
“None of these are his favorites? Are these prepared for Gabrielle?” Michael asked, his lands clasped behind his back
He glanced over the dishes before him, giving a slight nod as he continued, “He had eaten very little since he fell ill. He also had a minimal intake of oily stuff.”
“Most of the dishes prepared at home now are catered to Mrs. Zechman’s taste,” Charles replied.
Michael’s eyes sparkled with amusement.
“Ah, I see how it is.” He sneakily plucked a shrimp from the plate, popping it into his mouth as he turned to walk away. “This is quite good.”

napkin to wipe his hands and explained. “Im just taste testing the dish for you”
Mortified, he shot Gabrielle an awkward glance.
“Mr. Lefevre,” she greeted politely.
Michael was surprised and hurriedly greeted her, “Hello, Gabrielle”
“Let’s eat. Jonathan said curtly

Jonathan and Gabrielle sat on the left side, Michael on the right. Charles brought out wine, but Michael waved it off, opting for juice instead.
“It’s not often I get to dine with Gabrielle. I’ll stick to non–alcoholic drinks,” he said.
Just as he picked up his fork, his phone buzzed. Frowning at the caller ID, he answered tersely, “What do you want?”
