Chapter 223
Ethan’s expression darkened instantly, as though the words had struck a raw nerve, unearthing a pain long buried.
“Isabella’s nothing but a gold-digging social climber,” he spat bitterly, revealing the ugly truth behind their divorce—how she’d transformed overnight, chasing status and wealth.
His gaze turned icy.
“So why should I let her walk away unscathed?” The mere mention of Isabella’s name was a trigger, igniting a storm of fury laced with something darker—possessiveness.
How could she move on so effortlessly, especially to Alexander? Ethan’s face remained an unreadable mask.
“I’ll make sure all of Ontdale knows exactly what kind of woman Isabella Sinclair is—a leech who tried to drain me dry.”
Sophia adjusted her blazer, a faint smirk playing on her lips.
“Perhaps she didn’t mean it that way. Growing up an orphan, she must equate money with safety. It’s only natural.” She deftly shifted the conversation.
“Eleanor gave me hell today for even considering the GM position. Called it a pipe dream.” She sighed, leaning into him with practiced innocence. “Maybe she’s right. Should I start from the bottom, Ethan?”
“Eleanor has a habit of overstepping,” Ethan muttered, his irritation flaring. “But I won’t let her dictate my decisions—or yours.”
Sophia’s fingers trailed soothingly along his temple.
“A little diplomacy wouldn’t hurt. Eleanor has her own struggles. Your father’s never home, and she can’t parade her new lover around the way he does.” Her voice was a soft melody, designed to soothe.
“I also heard she wants to bring him into the company. If we help him settle in, maybe she’ll back off.”
Ethan’s anger simmered, threatening to boil over. Sophia noticed but remained composed, pressing closer.
“Ethan, sometimes I feel sorry for you.” Her voice dripped with honeyed sympathy. “William dismisses you, your father’s off with his other family, and even Eleanor isn’t fully on your side. And Isabella…” She let the name linger like poison.
“Forget her. She’s been gunning for you since the divorce. I wish I could do more—share your burdens, walk this path with you.”
She wrapped her arms around him, her breath warm against his ear.
“Ethan, I’m the only one who truly stands by you. And I promise—I’ll never leave you.”
