The moment the Sogin High School results dropped, Stella rushed to check her own.
So much had happened at home lately that she hadn’t even cracked open a book before the exams. She knew her grades would probably slip, but she never imagined she’d fall this far down the rankings
Staring at her score and rank, Stella felt her vision go black. She never thought she’d drop to 150th place. With a dark look, she scrolled back up to check Simone’s results, and the second she saw them, her face turned even uglier
Stella thought. Why? First place is always mine. I used to have Simone completely beat. When did everything change? Everything I used to be proud of my family and my grades, is now all Simone’s Why her?”

Simone glanced at the message, then picked up her phone and replied with a voice note. She said. Tell them Jonas was poisoned. That’s all they need to know
When Samuel heard that Jonas had been poisoned, disbelief filled his tired eyes. He blurted out, “How could my dad be poisoned Norah’s the one who makes all his meals. There’s no way something like this could happen.”
Sebastian thought. Even now, he is still so sure of himself. He let out a cold laugh and said, “We have no reason to lie to you. My boss is just giving you a heads–up. Believe it or not, that’s your call.”

“You’d never guess Sebastian scoffed, then turned and walked away.
Back at Irwin Mansion, Samuel didn’t make a fuss about Jonas being poisoned. Instead, he quietly took samples of the food Jonas had been eating and sent them out for testing.
A day later, the hospital results came back: the problem was in the soup Jonas had b
been drinking all along.
The doctor looked serious. He said. “Mr. Spence, someone put a poisonous mushroom in the soup. It damages the liver and kidneys, and taking small amounts over time can be fatal. How did you realize your father was poisoned?”
Jonas had been staying at their hospital, and they’d run every test they could think of, but never found the cause. No one expected it to be poisoning
Samuel was still in shock over the news. After a long pause, he finally replied, “The director at Consen Institute told me. Is there any way to cure the prison
The ductor shook his head helplessly, looking a bit reluctant. He said, “The poison’s already deep in his organs. All we can do now is buy your father a few more months. There’s no way to completely cure him.
“He’ll need liver and kidney dualysis, but whether he can handle it depends on him. The risks are yours to bear.”
Samuel felt a chill run through him, a wave of helplessness washing over him. After leaving the hospital, he went to Consen Institute again, but this time he wasn’t lucky enough to run into Sebastian.
Sebastian was still in his office. When he heard Samuel had come by, he sent someone else to pass along a message.
The person said, “Mr. Spence, Mr. Lawrence says your father missed the best window for treatment. If you’d come sooner, your father might’ve had a few more years. Now, even with surgery, he doesn’t have long. We can’t take this case? With that, he left.
Hearing that Sebastian wasn’t going to take Jonas’s case, Samuel finally gave up hope.
Shace Jonas’s illness couldn’t be put off any longer, Samuel immediately called the hospital that had been treating Jonas and agreed to the surgery.
After getting back home, Samuel immediately investigated everyone in the house. He never would’ve guessed that the one who tampered with Jonas’s medicine wasn’t the caretaker, but Norali, the woman who slept beside him every night.
That night, no one at the Spence residence got any sleep. Samuel called everyone into the living room. He sat on the sofa with a dark, unreadable

Norah felt a faint sense of unease. She thought, ‘Could it be that Samuel found out about my poisoning of Jonas? No. That’s impossible. That person had promised the poison would be nearly impossible to detect. Her face quickly returned to normal.
Norah carefully sat down next to Samuel, reaching out to cover his hand with hers. She asked softly. “Samuel, it’s so late. Did something happen?”
Suddenly. Samuel’s expression changed. He shoved Norah away with so much force that Norah was sent sprawling onto the floor
Samuel said. “Get away from me. He glared at Norah with disgust, his heart a mess of emotions. He’d suspected everyone except Norah, with whom he shared his bed. He never imagined the one poisoning Jonas would be his wife,
In Samuel’s mind. Norah had always seemed gentle and considerate. He never would’ve believed she could be so vacious underneath it all.
Norah was startled. She looked up at Samuel pitifully, “Samuel, did I do something wrong?” she whispered. Meanwhile, she was racing to figure out why he was so angry,
It was the first time Stella had ever seen Samuel this furious, and she was completely shocked
Stella looked at Samuel, forcing herself to speak up for Norah despite her fear. “Dad, why are you suddenly treating Mom like this? Did something happen, or is this just a misunderstanding“”
As soon as Stella spoke. Raymond and Charles jumped in too.
Raymond said, “Yeah, Dad, Norah’s taken such good care of the family all these years. How could you treat her like this?” He shot Samuel disapproving look, then crouched down to help Norah up from the floor.
Charles, guessing Samuel had been in a bad mood lately, rubbed his temples and said, “Dad, I know there’s been a lot going on at home, and I get that you’re upset, but that’s no reason to take it out on Norah
Hearing all this, Samuel looked up in disbelief. He swept his gaze over each of them. He let out a laugh, more angry than amused. He said, “I had no idea my daughter and sons wouldn’t even stand up for me.”
