Chapter 1
The moment I found out my poor boyfriend was actually the rich heir of an elite New York family, rather than getting upset, I actually felt a strange sense of peace.
Kaiden Xavier and I had been dating for seven years.
Back when we first stepped into society, we were all penniless.
Over time, I gradually climbed the ladder of success, but Kaiden remained in the same spot.
I wanted him to try harder for the life we dreamed of, but he replied, “Do you look down on me because I’m not rich or successful?”
I didn’t know how to respond.
We once swore we’d never part.
But planning a future together started to feel like a one–person job–me doing all the pushing while he stood still.
I was exhausted.
“Kaiden, you’re getting married next month. When do you plan to tell your girlfriend who you really are?”
Kaiden remained silent.
“Why the silence? Don’t tell me that you’ve actually fallen for her?”
I could hear the entire exchange clearly.

My feet stopped moving as I stared at the half–open door in front of me.
Kaiden? Is it Kaiden Xavier?
Could it just be someone with the same name?
But just then, another colder voice answered, crushing my hope.
“No. I just want her to have a few more good memories before I leave.”
“Hah. I thought you enjoyed acting like a poor person. Honestly, it’s already quite something, an ordinary girl dating the Xavier family’s heir for seven whole years. That’s more than most could dream of.
“But Kaiden, if you’re telling me you’re struggling to let her go, I get it. People like us rarely find real emotion. Fiona doesn’t care that you’re poor or unskilled. She’s been by your side this whole time. I heard she even saved up to buy a home so you two could settle down here. That’s pretty amazing.
“What a shame…”
Kaiden set his glass down and said calmly, “There’s really nothing to feel sorry about. We were never meant to be in the same world.”
The moment he said that, it felt like I had been struck hard and suddenly woke up from a dream.
So he had been hiding the truth all along.
He was never just some average guy struggling to get by, he was actually the son of the powerful Xavier family.
The Xavier family was one of the top families in New York, the kind of people most couldn’t even get close to, no matter how hard they tried.

Who would’ve thought that someone like him once shared a small basement apartment with me? That he used to eat cheap pasta from one plate with me? That we’d even fight for clearance items at the grocery store with elderly shoppers?
It’s hard to put my emotions into words.
My chest feels tight.
There’s some hurt, yes.
But even more than that, I feel like a weight has been lifted.
Then I recalled a phone conversation I had with my uncle’s wife, Elisa Whitner, last week about getting married.
She sounded so frustrated, “Fiona, seriously, what do you even see in that guy? He’s broke, he’s got no career, and other than his face, he’s nothing but a spineless freeloader. You’re smart, pretty, and you’ve got a great job. You could have anyone. Why are you stuck on this useless
man?”
I ended up defending Kaiden.
“Elisa, he’s really a decent person. He just never had the right opportunity…”
She only shook her head and let out a quiet sigh, staying silent.
That made me feel even worse.
I glanced into the living room and saw Kaiden quietly reading behind the glass.
I understood all too well what Elisa had left unsaid between the lines.

Seven years is a long time–it’s not just a few months.
He hasn’t changed at all.
No new job, no promotions, no better pay.
Only two things could explain that.
Either he doesn’t know what he’s doing, or he simply doesn’t care enough to improve himself.
But I know him, he’s really smart.
I used to promise myself I’d stay by his side forever.
But keeping a relationship alive on my own gets me exhausted.
Something cold brushed my face.
That’s when I noticed tears were falling.
I stared at the doorway one last time and turned away, leaving without looking back.
Just as they said, I still need to earn money, buy a place, and build a future.
But now, there’s no longer a place for Kaiden in that home.
