Chapter 9
After he left, I spun my chair around and gazed out the window at the clear blue sky.
I couldn’t keep deceiving myself.
It’s true that I loved Kaiden, but it’s also true that I’m growing weary of him.
This feeling of weariness didn’t just come out of nowhere.
It started one weekend when Kaiden and I talked about the
skyrocketing housing prices in New York. Since he was quite skilled, I suggested he look for a job with a higher salary.
Kaiden kept rejecting the idea.
In a moment of frustration, I asked him, “Can’t you just compromise for once, for the sake of our future?”
He stared at me with calm, almost detached eyes.
He replied, “I’ve already told you I’m average and poor. Do you look down on me?”
I was speechless.
Even now, I still feel down whenever I think about that conversation.
In the two months since I returned to the United States, I’ve been so caught up in work that I never had time to search for a new place, so I’ve been staying in a hotel.

Now that I finally have some free time, I decided it was time to find my own place.
I have saved quite a few landlords‘ contacts in my phone.
I quickly drafted a rental message and sent it out to the group.
It didn’t take long for someone to respond.
“Fiona, you’re back? Why are you still renting? Didn’t you already buy a place?”
The message came from the landlord of the house where Kaiden and I once lived together.
I stared at the message, momentarily speechless.
“When did I buy a house?”
The landlord replied, “Last year, when you went abroad, your boyfriend purchased the house you were renting, and it’s still in your name. Didn’t you know about it?”
I was taken aback.
After a long pause, I thanked the landlord and called Kaiden.
The call was answered quickly, but neither of us spoke.
I rubbed my temples and asked, “I heard from the landlord that you bought the house and put it under my name?”
Kaiden replied, “Consider it a keepsake.”
I stayed quiet for a moment and ended the call.

Kaiden and I had lived in that house for seven years.
Every corner of it held memories of our love.
We kissed at the door, tried new recipes in the kitchen, read together in bed, and danced under the dim light of the living room… As my eyes moved across the familiar space, those tender or romantic moments flooded back, causing a dull ache in my head.
I blinked and noticed a familiar box on the coffee table.
I walked over and opened it.
Inside the box was a pure green emerald bracelet, trimmed with gold, and I noticed a small crack where the gold was inserted.
Beneath it, there was a plain ring.
As I stood there in a daze, I heard the door unlocking behind me.
I didn’t turn around.
Moments later, a pair of arms wrapped around me from behind.
Kaiden’s voice was slightly rough as he said, “I took the other ring.”
