Chapter 7
“Raina!”
My mother burst into the ward with teary eyes and slapped me.
I touched my mouth, and my fingers came away stained with blood.
“Are you crazy?” I asked.
My mother froze for a second as if she didn’t expect me, who was usually quiet, to talk back.
She yelled at me hysterically, “Is this what your adoptive parents taught you? No manners, no respect, and bullying your sister? I thought you’d changed!”
I replied sarcastically, “And you think you taught Elaine well, huh?”
Her chest rose and fell as she got angrier. She grabbed my arm and yanked me out of bed. “Go back to that training school now!”
“No, I’m not.
As we struggled, I kicked her in the stomach.
My mother collapsed in pain and stared at me in disbelief.
Right then, the doctor knocked on the door. “Is Raina’s family here?”
Lucian pursed his lips as he read the report the doctor handed him.
With a doubtful tone, my mother asked, “Are you being serious,

doctor?”
The doctor’s expression darkened. .“Why would I lie? She has bruises, fresh wounds, and old scars everywhere. She’s extremely
undernourished.”
Lucian’s hand trembled, and a bunch of checklists slipped from his grip.
I reclined against the bed, acting like none of that had anything to do with me.
The doctor looked at me strangely before continuing, “It looks like
she’s been abused. You-”
Trying to protect his image, my father quickly interrupted, “Don’t bother. She did this to herself.”
My mother chimed in, “She’s always been like this. Sorry for the
inconvenience.”
The doctor turned back to me and told them meaningfully, “You’d better take her for a full mental evaluation.”
My parents nodded in agreement.
Once the doctor had left, my father glared at me and snapped, “Are you trying to embarrass us?”
I stayed calm, pulling the blanket up. “I have nothing to do with you. My dad is Polonius.”
“Nonsense!”
My father’s breathing turned heavy, and he looked like he was ready to

strike me.
My mother quickly stepped in to steady him. “Don’t work yourself up. You’ve got a bad heart.”
Lucian, who hadn’t said a word until then, finally spoke hoarsely, “Mr. Simpson, Mrs. Simpson, go visit Elaine. I’ll stay here.”
Hearing that, my parents, who were unwilling to stay, left quickly.
Lucian walked over, his face filled with sorrow. “Raina, let me see your wounds.”
I dodged him in disgust. “Don’t touch me.”
“Just let me check.”
He gently grabbed my hands and lifted my shirt.
Under the pale light, the scars on my back looked horrifying.
Fresh wounds crossed over the faded ones, creating a disturbing and ugly sight.
Big bruises also covered parts of my skin.
Lucian froze, stunned by what he saw.
As he rolled up my sleeves and pants, more scars of varying sizes
appeared, all as terrible as those on my
back.
He pulled me gently into his arms, and warm tears slid down my neck.
“I’m sorry,” he whispered.
