“I’m a Queen, sir!” Rue calls over her shoulder, and my wolf snorts. She says that like we don’t already fucking know it. Everything about Rue oozed royal elegance with dominant power. I watched as Rue’s hips sashayed away from me. She hasn’t left my thoughts since the first time I saw her, and the raging hard-on I got from watching her defend her son is making it difficult to walk. How could someone simultaneously be so beautiful, intelligent, funny, and adorable? While intimidating to everyone else, her glares left me wanting to annoy her so those adorable hazel daggers would point toward me. My thoughts shifted to what the Luna and Cassie were shouting.

I had rushed this way when I heard shouting in the hallway again. Fearing it was Cassandra or Jessie coming back to confront Rue again, I jogged into the scene. I’d caught most of what they were arguing about, however it didn’t make sense. The Rue I knew was adamantly against cheating, and if Rue were the Alpha Heir to the Blood Red pack, her son would naturally be the second in line. Even if Rue’s son didn’t have a present father, she would know the man she was having an affair with, right? A hotel six years ago… My own memories of that fateful night with Jessica sparked. But what if Jessica was lying…

I mind-linked Sammy: come to my office and let Rue run the class.

Sammy: Yes, sir, she just got here, so I’ll be right up.

I strolled slowly toward my office, breathing through the uncomfortable erection I still had until it slowly eased. After a while, Sammy waltzed into my office and took one look at my face, “It seems your little chat with Rue didn’t go as well as you hoped?”

My brows furrowed, “Why would you say that?”

Sammy grinned, looking like he had won the lottery with his toothy expression. “She was steaming when she got to the class, and you look like you’re sporting a massive woody

with no relief.”

“The relief part will hopefully come later.” I shrugged at my friend. He was the only person who was able to talk to me like this. As an Alpha Heir, my people needed to respect me as their leader. There must be respect to harness trust, so I followed the standards and rules of social hierarchy etiquette, with only two exceptions: Sammy and

Rue. Sammy was efficient and highly effective in his role as Beta, even if it meant challenging my orders as a voice of reason. I knew from historical data that I couldn’t surround myself with yes-wolves. I needed a secondary voice to challenge me when necessary. Sammy waited expectantly and I grumbled, “Everything was good until her Stepsister and stepmother confronted her.”

Sammy raised an eyebrow, “Her family confronted her about what?”

I sat on my small couch, sinking into the soft cushions. I bridged my hands on the back of my hands, replaying the conversation in my head, “I think she had a one-night stand at a

hotel that conceived her child.”

My Beta rubbed the back of his neck, hesitating to say what was on his mind. I growled, “Spit it out.”

“I’ve heard the rumors around camp but haven’t actually looked into it yet.” Sammy looks almost embarrassed. Sammy had some odd kinks, so it was rare for him to be embarrassed. Were the rumors that ridiculous, or was he uncomfortable talking to me

about Rue because I wanted her so badly he was afraid I would lash out??

“What rumors?” I prompt, wanting to get to the bottom of everything. I was not too fond

of lies, secrets, and unanswered questions.

“The rumors are that Rue was having an affair with a married man, or an unknown drifter,

or a crazy rogue, and her son is an illegitimate child from that affair. The family tried to keep it quiet and sent her away to raise her son in shame.” Sammy’s tone changes to the one he usually has when giving me reports.

“There is something else going on here, Sam.” I ran my knuckles over my scruffy jawline. The way her Stepfamily talked to her was beyond a simple affair scandal. The stepmother said something about Alpha Sinner changing the named Heir.

Sam sat forward in his chair across from me, his elbows on his knees, and his hands joined. “That doesn’t make sense. According to official records, Rue has always been the Heir to the Blood Red pack.”

“It’s never changed?” I ask.

“Not that I’m aware of through official channels, but Cassie does attend on behalf of the pack to all Heir-related social gatherings,” Sammy responds.

Chapter 30

“I wasn’t paying enough attention to things like that when I attended. Maybe I’m wrong. Let’s watch the footage to see if I misheard.” I pull up the security footage from all the

confrontations between Rue and everyone else. As we review the tapes together a small suspicion starts to form in the recesses of my mind. “I wonder what hotel Jessie and Rue’s family keep discussing.”

Sammy seems to follow my train of thought, “Want me to investigate the situation some

more.”

I nod, “Full background report, and don’t leave anything out.”

Sammy’s face got tired. “You know it was your father’s men who looked into the hotel

night, not me.”

I nodded, “Yeah, that’s why I need you to look into both nights, please. There is missing information on both cases, and you know how much I hate unanswered questions.”

Sammy grinned, “Yeah. I’ll start from square one and work my way from there. It will take time, but based on everything that is happening, I’ll set it as a priority.”

“Thanks, Sam. You can lean on Rue to run the course if need be.” I turn back toward my

desk to get back to work. I’ve been distracted the last few weeks enough, but the harder I

try to focus on the work, the more my mind wanders to a series of what-ifs and maybes.
