That evening, I was curled up on the couch with Thai takeout and Netflix when I
heard Dom’s key in the lock. But he wasn’t alone.
He stumbled in drunk, with Vanessa supporting him, her arm around his waist like she belonged there.
“Hey, go make Dom some coffee and bring it upstairs,” she ordered without even looking at me. “Black, no sugar.”
She’d always spoken to me like I was the help, but I’d never stood up to her before. Vanessa was Dom’s most successful client at his talent agency and his so–called
“oldest friend.”
Last year at Dom’s birthday party at The Chateau Marmont, she’d gotten wasted on tequila shots and thrown herself into his arms in front of everyone, planting a sloppy kiss on his mouth.
I’d stood there frozen, wanting to disappear.
Afterward, Dom had brushed it off. “She’s like my sister, babe. Don’t make a big deal about it. You wouldn’t want to start rumors that could hurt her acting career,
right?”
From the way they were wrapped around each other now, it was clear Dom hadn’t
told her we were on the outs.
I went to the kitchen and returned with a steaming mug. “Here you go,” I said
sweetly.
“Jesus, what took you so long?” Vanessa snapped. “Can’t you see how bad he feels? Sometimes I wonder if you even care about him at all.”
“Oh, you clearly care so much more,” I said, setting down the mug. “Go ahead, give it to him before he passes out.”
She snatched the mug and held it to Dom’s lips. The moment the liquid touched
his tongue, his eyes flew open and he spat it out, spraying dark liquid all over
Vanessa’s white blouse.
“What the hell did you give him?” she shrieked, jumping up and frantically trying to
wipe the stains.
I glanced at her outfit–a $3,000 Gucci top from their new collection. Oops.

“Apple cider vinegar, Tabasco, and a handful of salt,” I shrugged. “Best hangover
cure ever.”
She slammed the mug down so hard it cracked. “Just because he didn’t spend
Valentine’s Day with you? You’re such a psycho!”
“None of your business,” I said coldly. “This is between me and my fiancé. Why are
you even here?”
Dom was fully alert now, his bloodshot eyes darting between us. “Get out!” he
shouted.
Vanessa smirked at me. “You heard him. Get out.”
“I meant you,” Dom growled, grabbing her arm. “Get the fuck out, Vanessa.” Her face fell. She clearly hadn’t expected Dom to take my side.
