Chapter 16
When I felt like I couldn’t take it anymore, Chloe finally showed up, running and apologizing, “Sorry, I was discussing the competition with Luke and lost track of time.”
Caleb calmly said, “No worries, at least you’re trying to help the family, better than some ungrateful wretch.”
The driver said soothingly, “No problem. I’ll drive faster.”
But they still ended up late.
As they reached the classroom door, they were caught red–handed by the homeroom teacher.
Chloe turned pale, gasping for air, “Sorry, teacher. It’s my fault for wasting time, I made I late.”
I kept a straight face, saying nothing.
The teacher glanced at them and said to Chloe with a friendly tone, “I understand. No need for explanations. Go inside.”
“Thank you, teacher.”
followed her inside, but then I heard the teacher’s stern voice, “I, don’t drag Chloe down again! This is the last warning!”
I turned back. Teacher, Chloe made it clear it was her fault I was late.”
“Enough! I know your personality. If you keep arguing, you’ll be standing outside during class.”
I didn’t want to miss class as I was already behind. I entered the classroom in silence, feeling pretty down. I wished the exams would be over soon so I
could escape from them,
During lunch, Chloe was surrounded by a crowd, sharing stories about her professional gaming team, making everyone envious.
A follower looked at me and said, “Some people are just jealous of Chloe and deliberately make her late.”
Chloe smiled, offering no explanation.
I rested my head on the desk, ignoring the group.
After school, Chloe said, pointedly looking at me, “I’m going to training camp today.”
”
I quietly packed my books and left the classroom. Chloe watched my retreating figure with a smirk, saying to her follower, “Do Don’t let the teacher find out.”
Thanks. I won’t forget to reward you guys.”
Chloe left happily, determined to step all over me; she was the most qualified sister in the Welch family.
my
homework as usual.
- with my backpack, headed straight to the infirmary. Jack sat in his chair, his refined face showing a hint of mockery, “What’s up?”
“I’m here to do homework, please take me in!” I entered confidently. As long as he didn’t throw me out.
Jack was surprised by my familiarity. He thought I’d be timid and afraid to come back.
But when I asked questions, I was still scolded.
“Can you stop thinking like a sieve? Whatever you put in just leaks out?”
“Don’t ask simple questions in the future; figure it out yourself.”
I didn’t argue. Instead, I took notes obediently.
The room was quiet, but my stomach growled loudly. I blushed; I had eaten a bread but was still hungry. Jack glanced at the time and ordered takeout, “Let’s eat first”
Sitting across from him, I noticed the scars on his wrist and couldn’t help but ask, “When did you have that accident? Was it serious?”
Jack silently opened the takeout box and placed it on the table. He looked at me, his eyes clouded, “A long time ago.”
“Me too. My parents died in that car accident, leaving me and my brothers to rely on each other.”
Thinking of my past dependence on my brothers, a hint of self–mockery flashed in my eyes.
After their parents passed, they had a tough time together, and their sibling bond was strong. Then Chloe arrived, and everything changed.
Jack’s grip on his spoon tightened.“What are your plans?”
I’m aiming for Harvard University. I want to leave this city and start over.”
