Hearing that, Tessa finally felt a bit more at ease.
Julian looked at her with something close to awe–he hadn’t expected this woman to lie so smoothly, not even blinking as she spun the story.
It rolled off her tongue like second nature.
The realization left him a little stunned.
He gave her a subtle nod of approval, and she merely raised a brow in response, saying nothing.
But that, at least, was an acknowledgment.
If Julian didn’t still have some potential use, Tessa wouldn’t have bothered bringing him along in the first place.
When it came down to it, he couldn’t get half as much done as she could.
But later, when things got riskier, she already had plans to let Julian handle the dirty work.
Before long, Tessa and Julian had managed to
tail Leonard and Megan without a hitch.
Once the driver heard the full story, he hit the gas with enthusiasm–gone was the earlier hesitation.
His mind had locked onto one mission: to save the girl from the clutches of temptation and steer her back to the right path.
All of this came from the fact that he had a daughter of his own, and just the thought of reckless boys luring girls away made his blood run cold.

Besides, Julian’s motives were far too obvious, almost aggressively so.
Tessa had no intention of being used as someone’s stepping stone; she’d have to be an idiot to fall for that.
After everything they’d been through together, she had a clear picture of the kind of man Julian really was, which was precisely why she was still delaying the wedding.
“Alright, showing up early isn’t as good as showing up at the perfect moment. Let’s go.”

Tessa nudged Julian as she stepped out of the car.
As she climbed out, she gestured for Julian to pay the fare.
The driver watched the pair walk away, frowning slightly.
Were those two in the first car really running away together? He was starting to have doubts.
