Chapter 12 A DNA Test
The words “abandoned” left her lips lightly, yet they conveyed a profound sorrow.
Ethan’s heart tightened as he listened.
He had only intended to ask about the details but ended up touching on a painful memory.
Ethan stiffened, offering a forced smile before awkwardly saying, “Actually, I can try to find your family. Maybe they had their
reasons.”
Eleanor smiled bitterly. “Maybe.”
If it weren’t for Margaret’s dying wish, she would never have intended to search for those people. Being thrown next to a garbage heap proved that they never wanted her to live in the first place.
“If you need anything, just ask. We’ve been looking for my sister for years. Our connections and processes are more familiar than those of ordinary families.”
Ethan smiled, his tone seemingly casual, yet his face remained serious.
“If I need help, I’ll definitely come to you.” She didn’t refuse Ethan’s kindness.
Once she made up her mind to find someone, she might really need his assistance.
In Laura’s hospital room, Sienna, the caregiver, wore an expression of frustration.
She had been taking care of everything for Laura with great attention, only to realize how tiring it was to be a caregiver. Not only did she have to serve tea and water, but she also had to clean all of Laura’s toiletries.
She picked up her phone and was about to send a message to Gabriel when she received a text. “Ms. Sienna, the results of the investigation you asked for from the hospital are ready.”
Sienna’s frustration was immediately dissipated.
The results she had been waiting for had finally arrived.
Recently, she had bumped into Ethan several times in the hospital, carrying a folder. Driven by curiosity, she had hired a top detective to conduct an investigation.
Though it cost a seven–figure deposit, it finally yielded results.
“Come on, let me guess. Is Eleanor pregnant?”
n
She couldn’t think of any other reason for Ethan’s frequent visits to the hospital.
It had to be a pregnancy.
“Pregnant?” The person on the other end of the line asked, confused, then quickly denied it. “No, not pregnant.”
“Not?” Sienna was momentarily stunned. She had thought it was almost certain. “If not pregnancy, then what is it?”
She couldn’t think of any other reason for Ethan’s frequent hospital visits.
“It’s a DNA test. Ethan requested the hospital to conduct a DNA test.”
“What did you say?”
Sienna’s mind went blank, and her hand slipped, almost dropping the phone.
Ms. Sienna, I found out that Ethan was doing a DNA test,”
After receiving confirmation, Sienna fell silent.
“A DNA test for who?”
1/3
“We couldn’t find that out. Ethan kept it secret. This hospital has a strong confidentiality policy, and my people only told me it’s a paternity test, but nothing else could be discovered.”
A DNA test… Could it be that the missing Xander family daughter has been found? But that can’t be right. It doesn’t match Eleanor! There’s no way Eleanor could be the missing girl.
Sienna sneered. With Eleanor and Ethan’s relationship, it seemed more like an affair.
She didn’t believe she couldn’t find evidence of the two of them having an affair!
The investigation result disappointed her greatly. If Eleanor really was pregnant with Ethan’s child, Gabriel would definitely give up on her. No one could accept becoming an accidental father.
“Keep investigating and let me know the results as soon as they come in. It’d be best to find out who he’s having the test with.”
If they had indeed found the missing daughter, she would have to call Jolene Xander. This was big news! She definitely had to sell this favor to Jolene, the adopted daughter of the Xander family.
She dialed Jolene’s number.
“Hey, Jolene, Ethan apparently found someone and is doing a DNA test. Do you think it could be your family’s lost daughter?”
“I’ve told you how many times not to call me Jolene?” A frustrated voice answered from the other side. “They do DNA tests every year, always disappointed. Don’t bring me these rumors.”
“Jo… Lynn, but this time Ethan seems pretty confident. I think it might really be…”
“Really? And so what? Even if that girl returns, My dad and brother still love me the most. What kind of waves could she cause? Also, you’ve got time to gossip about me, but maybe you should focus on your own affairs. I’ve heard about your scandal abroad. Didn’t you say you could handle Gabriel? How did Ethan end up with him?”
Mentioning this, Sienna’s face flushed with anger.
“That’s all lies from Ethan!”
“If there’s nothing else, I’m hanging up.” Jolene hung up the phone without hesitation.
Sienna was so angry that she almost threw her phone on the flook
“She is just an adopted daughter, what’s so great about that?”
Jolene’s name carried the family’s hopes for the lost daughter, which was why Jolene never liked that name.
But Sienna looked down on her and had never been willing to change how she addressed her.
What made her angrier was that despite being an adopted daughter, Jolene was deeply loved by the Xander family. Sienna couldn’t express her anger openly, especially with the Sullivan family’s upcoming big deal with the Xander family. If that deal went through, the Sullivan family would gain more power, and once she married Gabriel, those shareholders would have nothing to say about it.
With that thought, her anger simmered down.
The next day, Eleanor stood outside the McKenzie family villa with her household registration and other documents, waiting for Gabriel.
Today was their divorce day.
Inside the villa, Gabriel had just finished a phone call when he turned around and saw Eleanor walking toward him.
She was holding a file, walking with light steps. Thinking about her relationship with Ethan, Gabriel felt anxious, and without realizing it, he opened his work account.
His assistant sent a message. “Mr. McKenzie, the people who oppose you in the company are the ones who used to support Edward.”
Edward McKenzie, his cousin, had always coveted the McKenzie Corporation.

Those people were just waiting for him to make a mistake.
It seemed that the rumors Ethan had spread were indeed effective.
Gabriel turned off his phone.
He knew Eleanor was waiting for him outside.
Once they got the divorce certificate, Eleanor would be truly free, and the next step would be to fall into Ethan’s arms.
Just thinking about how close she was with someone like that made his anger flare up.
The last time they were here, she had brought him a dessert, and they ended up having sex. He was angry about being set up, but what made him even angrier was that she had brought up divorce.
He turned off his phone, laid down on the bed, and closed his eyes, hoping to fall asleep and forget about it.
But soon, the whole room was filled with an alarm.
Then, thick smoke poured into the room from outside.
Eleanor stood outside the villa, unable to reach Gabriel’s phone.
It wasn’t until she heard the alarm and cries for help from inside that she realized there was a fire!
Eleanor froze, quickly looking toward the people inside the villa.
She rushed inside, grabbing a maid who was running out. “Is Gabriel upstairs?”
She remembered how much Gabriel was afraid of fire. He wouldn’t even enter the kitchen. If the house was on fire, he definitely wouldn’t make it out.
The maid, panicking to escape, paused for a moment and nodded quickly. “Mr. McKenzie is upstairs. Mrs. McKenzie, you should escape! The fire is too big!”
