Chapter 6

Brendan purposely avoided making eye contact with Arlene.
He just gave Wilma a warning look and went to the study.
No matter how much Arlene struggled and pleaded in place, he turned a blind eye, he was punishing Arlene, thinking Arlene was deliberately bringing cookies to tease Paige.
Wilma raised her mouth, and Sherrie, Darin, they all laughed.
Laughed so loudly, laughed like a demon.
“Arlene, come over and sit down.” Paige said gently, smiling and waving at Arlene.
Sorry Arlene, couldn’t move at all.
Her legs felt like lead, and her mind was filled with the bullying they had subjected her to.
“Paige, isn’t this Arlene? Our school beauty…” Darin chuckled, emphasizing the words “school beauty” with a hint of sarcasm.
Paige looked surprised. “You guys are classmates? Well, get along well then.”
Arlene stood there, with only one thought in mind,“to escape…”
“Paige…” Arlene’s voice was trembling. “I… suddenly remembered, there’s something at home I need to take care of, I have to go back first, sorry…”
Arlene turned around, trying to escape, but her legs wouldn’t cooperate and she fell to the ground after taking a few steps.
“We went to visit some old classmates.”
Wilma took the lead and walked towards Arlene step by step.
Arlene wanted to escape, really wanted to escape.
But she couldn’t stand up, her body was so stiff that she had no control over it at all.
She was scared, scared not of the three of them, but scared of everything she had been through in the past.
“What’s wrong? Can’t stand up?” Darin raised his hand and grabbed Arlene’s back collar, lifting her up directly.“Our school beauty didn’t wet her pants again, did she…”
Arlene lowered her head, her deaf left ear ringing painfully, her skin tight on her face, she desperately wanted to escape.
But couldn’t escape.
“Bren is getting married, to Paige… You used to have a thing with Brendan, so how does that work?” Darin chuckled, putting his arm around Arlene as they walked out.
Arlene knew that Darin always liked to find all kinds of excuses to bully her.
On the day Arlene registered as a freshman, Darin started pursuing her. At that time, Arlene didn’t even know she had caught the eye of a demon.
She rejected Darin in public, and that was the beginning of her nightmare.
Later, Darin used the excuse that she wouldn’t give face, took off her clothes, took naked photos of her… burned her with cigarette butts, and had Wilma
and Sherrie beat her.
Locked her in a wooden box.
Forced her to sleep in a public restroom…
She didn’t listen, they had ways to make her drop out, ways to deal with the orphans in the orphanage.
She was the only child who passed the exam in the orphanage, she was the hope of the whole orphanage.
She couldn’t be expelled.
So even if she was forced to swallow nails, she still had to swallow them.
“Speak up!” Sherrie kicked Arlene down impatiently, looking at her.“Why are you silent? Bren doesn’t want you, got it? If you don’t listen, we can shut down that troubled orphanage of yours anytime!”
Arlene was lying on the grass, brushing off the dirt on her arms. She had to wear this outfit to meet Albert Stevenson later that night.
She wanted to make a good impression on the other person.

Looks like it was tough.
“Are you deaf and dumb, for God’s sake?” Sherrie slapped Arlene as soon as she got close.
The nanny walked past the backyard, she saw it, but pretended she didn’t see anything, and just left.
Everyone here just assumed that these three young masters and princess can bully Arlene however they want.
Arlene still didn’t say a word, and she never begged for mercy. She just stubbornly sat on the ground, letting them beat and scold her.
Darin once asked Arlene, “What were you thinking when you got hit and just sat there stubbornly without saying anything?”
Arlene didn’t answer.

Every time, Arlene was thinking, “I should just end it all, my life is worthless. I should just kill all three of them and we can all die together!” If she wanted to fight back, it wouldn’t be that hard to kill them.
But every time, she felt like she died again, “What will happen to those unwanted children in the orphanage…”
The dean used his meager salary to support her, his only top student. She couldn’t just die without giving back to them.
Over the years, Brendan has sent Arlene money on and off, but not much. He just gave Arlene a secondary card to use the money in that card to buy things.
What can Arlene buy? Spending over forty thousand on that bag was the most reckless and extravagant thing Arlene has ever done in her life.
During the last semester, Arlene was still working three part–time jobs a day and sending the money she earned to the orphanage.
Damn, so fucking boring,” Darin cursed, leaning against the side and smoking.
Wilma glanced at Darin and said, “Since Brendan doesn’t want her anymore, you’ve always liked her, just take her.“-
Darin’s eyes lit up for a moment, but he said with disdain, “Just a pair of old shoes, who cares?”
Arlene stood up from the ground, ignored the three people, and walked straight out.
“I can’t believe she did that. Is she asking for trouble?” Sherrie has the worst temper, they’re so used to being treated like royalty, they can’t stand Arlene acting like that.
Today Brendan proposed, and he even called Arlene over. In fact, by doing so, he already gave his consent for these three to continue bullying her, so Sherrie was completely unrestrained.
She ran up and gave Arlene a kick from behind, sending her straight into the landscaping pool in the yard.
Seattle in November had started to cool down, the water was cold and a bit chilling.
Arlene stood up awkwardly and wiped the water off her face.
I don’t even know if there were tears, they just all mixed together.
“Are you done causing trouble?”
guess he just couldn’t take it anymore, so Brendan finally came out.
Arlene knew deep down that Brendan didn’t want to boss her around in front of Paige. Brendan also knew that the three of them would deceive her. But he wanted Paige to feel at ease, to dispel her suspicions and worries.
Brendan sacrificed herself for her love.

Paige also followed out, looking at Arlene in surprise.“Arlene, how did you fall into the water?”
“She fell in by herself…” Sherrie said nervously.
Arlene crawled out of the pool, giving Brendan a defiant look
Brendan didn’t say a word.
“Sorry, I’m heading home first…” Arlene said, breathing heavily, wanting to escape.
“Arlene…” Brendan looked at Arlene, cleared his throat, instinctively wanted to step forward, but then thought of Paige and stopped in his tracks. “I’ll have the driver take you.”
Arlene turned back and gave Brendan a smile. “You don’t have to walk me…”
She swore, this is the last time I will ever love Brendan.”
Watching Arlene leave in a mess, Brendan felt like there was a stone in his heart, for some reason, he had a feeling he would regret it.

Riverside Manors.
Arlene didn’t have time to go home and change clothes.
Luckily, Brendan’s place wasn’t far from Albert’s house.
Arlene took fifteen minutes to run to the destination.
Arlene and Albert met at the fanciest club in Seattle. That day, Brendan and Houston, two wealthy businessmen, were there for a business dinner, and one of them was Albert.
When she went to give Brendan his coat, she met Albert for the first time.
According to Albert’s friend, Arlene’s face was right up Albert’s alley, it hit all his aesthetic points.
Albert asked for her contact information in front of Brendan, and Brendan didn’t object.
Albert was probably a very important client.
After that, Albert asked her out for dinner, she refused, and then he directly proposed marriage, which scared Arlene so much that she blocked him.
But now, Albert has become Arlene’s only lifeline.
She wanted to get married, she wanted to escape from Brendan, escape from Seattle, she wanted to use Albert’s help to expand her wings, earn more money by her own ability, she wanted to support those unwanted children in the orphanage…
