Chapter 5
Ken squeezed his eyes shut, trying hard to suppress his anger.
He sneered.
“If you don’t want to work for the Swinton family, get lost! Don’t team up
with Brietta to fool me!
“My parents aren’t home, so I call the shots. I can fire you anytime. What did Brietta offer you to make you side with her?”
He took a deep breath and continued, “Clean her up and let her out. Put on the gown I had custom–made for her. My parents want to celebrate for her.”
The nanny had watched me grow up. She was sobbing uncontrollably while holding my death notice.
“Mr. Swinton! I–I didn’t lie.
“Go home and see for yourself. Ms. Swinton’s body is still in the morgue. Only the family can claim it. Please, bring her home.”
The nanny’s voice trembled over the phone.
But Ken only grew more irritated.
He clicked his tongue.
“Fine. Let her keep playing this game! She faked her death just to get my attention, didn’t she? Brilliant. If she ever really dies, she won’t be able to pull this stunt again.

“Tell her, come if she likes, or don’t. We’ll just say this party’s for Nadya!”
The nanny tried to say more, but Ken hung up.
Despite his words and anger, unease gnawed at him.
The tightness in his chest made it hard to breathe.
He clutched his chest and reached for the phone again.
But just then, Nadya groaned. She was getting dizzy again. Ken quickly dropped the phone and rushed to her side.
“Ken, I keep getting dizzy. I’m scared. What if I really die and never see you again?”
Ken hurried to comfort her.
“Nadya, don’t say that! You’re fine. How could you die? I’m right here.
Don’t be scared.”
Touched, Nadya started crying in his arms.
But for some reason, Ken still felt distracted.
Brietta Swinton’s face kept flashing in his mind, her voice echoing in his
ears.
He had never felt like this before.
The unease overwhelmed him. After coaxing Nadya to sleep, he finally drove back to the Swinton’s residence.
The nanny was clutching my death notice, crying her heart out.
Seeing it, Ken’s heart dropped. His legs gave out, and he staggered back a few steps.

After all, he’d arranged for me to receive the world’s best water therapy. If all went well, I’d recover in two days.
Now that four days had passed, he thought I should be fully healed.
So why did this lie of mine make him panic so much?
He rubbed his forehead, trying to steady himself.
Then he stepped forward, shouting at the nanny again, “You’re really putting on a show, huh? Crying like this? Go do your job!”
The nanny’s hands shook as she handed him the death notice.
“Mr. Swinton! I swear I’m not lying.
“Even if she wanted to fool you, Ms. Swinton would never risk her life.”
