Vincenzo brought me back to Africa–not just for nostalgia, but to dig into how I got infected in the first place.
After looking into it, we found that the use of reusable syringes had been banned in the area for over a decade.
So how could someone “forget” to sterilize a needle?
It was jealousy–Gwendolyn could not stand seeing me with Hugh, so she tampered with things and deliberately got me infected.
Yet, things did not go as planned. A medical organization eventually traced the virus back to her.
She panicked and paid off the local police, pushing the blame onto the needle supplier to dodge the consequences.
To protect her–and maybe out of guilt Hugh agreed to cover my
treatment.
However, taking care of a chronically ill person wears down even the deepest sense of duty.
He did not marry me out of love. It was guilt, plain and simple.
The more Hugh listened, the more shaken he looked. He covered his ears and shook his head as if trying to block out the truth.
He could not believe the woman he once protected with his life could be that cruel.

“Yes, I did it on purpose.
“We were the ones who knew each other first. Why did you keep running to her?
“I wanted to ruin her. I wanted you to come back to me!”
She assumed Hugh was bankrupt, and that the past was too far behind to come back and bite her.
However, Hugh did not let it go. He hung a banner outside the hospital and blasted her confession over loudspeakers, nonstop.
On top of that, the authorities discovered she had also broken medical protocols as she was performing unnecessary surgeries on multiple patients.
The patient attacking her back then was one of her victims.
In the end, Gwendolyn was sent to prison.
Not long after that, Vincenzo and I had our wedding. The guests toasted and laughed, all saying we were a perfect match.
Vincenzo had been drinking a little too much and accidentally spilled the truth.
“Of course we are. I’ve been chasing this woman for eight years!”
I stared at him in shock. After the ceremony, I pressed him for answers, and he finally confessed.

I tilted my head, thinking it over. Then, my eyes widened. “That was you?”
Back then, I had helped an injured man without giving it much thought.
I never imagined that man was Vincenzo.
So that was where the strange sense of familiarity came from.
“Darling, you’re not mad that I didn’t tell you sooner, right?”
His face turned red, and he started acting all cute.
I had a feeling something was off and asked, “So, you went into immunology because of me, didn’t you?”
He hesitated, then gave a soft “mm–hmm.”
“Actually, the drug had already reached a stable phase. The previous results only showed improvement, never deterioration.
“I wouldn’t have gambled with your life otherwise.
“I just didn’t want to tell you everything right away because what if you didn’t believe me?
“I waited eight years for you to finally leave him, so I couldn’t take any chances.”
I stared at him for a second, pretending to be serious, then suddenly, I burst into laughter.
“Turns out, everything was meant to be.”
Later, we found out that on the day of our wedding, Hugh jumped off the hotel rooftop.
