Carlo and Monica followed Cedric’s gaze and when it landed on me, they
froze in total shock.
After being away for two years, seeing Cedric again made my eyes tear
- up.
“Cedric, how’s Grandpa doing?”
Cedric smiled at me, just like he used to when I was a kid.
“Ms. Fermor, Sir Fermor is doing well, but he talks about you all the time and misses you a lot!
“When he heard you were coming home, he was so excited he couldn’t sleep. He got up at dawn to go shopping with the maid, saying he’d make dumplings for you.”
Carlo couldn’t hide his surprise, and his words were all jumbled.
“Kathryn… you’re from the Fermor family?
“You’re really a Fermor?”
I gave him a sideways look, too grossed out to even answer.
Cedric looked Carlo and Monica up and down, his face getting darker.
“Mr. Neller, watch what you say. This is Sir Fermor’s own granddaughter. I hope nobody’s been dumb enough to mess with Ms. Fermor?”
Carlo shook his head really hard. “It’s all a misunderstanding–just a big misunderstanding!

“Kathryn, why didn’t you tell me before? If I knew you were a Fermor,
I…”
I cut him off with total disdain.
“So what if you had? I’m glad I kept my identity a secret, or else how would I have seen your true colors?

“Carlo, I might as well have thrown my years of sincerity to a dog. Remember what you said today. Never show your face to me again for the
rest of my life.
“Cedric, let’s go. I want to go home and see Grandpa.”
I started to leave, but Carlo instinctively reached for my arm, only to be
stopped by the bodyguards.
“Kathryn, don’t go! It’s all a misunderstanding. Please let me explain!
Don’t leave!”
Cedric opened the car door for me, giving Carlo a frosty look.
“Mr. Neller, know your place. Don’t make me misuse my power…”
Carlo just stood there like a statue as I got in, and Monica didn’t say a peep the whole time.
By the time we got to New York, it was nighttime.
As soon as I got out of the car, Grandpa hurried over, really worried. He looked me over from head to toe, then held my arm with eyes all watery. “You’ve lost weight!”
Tears started flowing down my face.
For the past two years, I’d spent almost all my time and energy taking care of Carlo, totally ignoring myself and my family.

Looking back, it felt like I was under some kind of spell.
I held Grandpa’s hand and walked into the house. My brother who had an apron on, came out of the kitchen and ruffled my hair really hard.
“You unfeeling brat. You’ve been gone for two years. Probably forgot all about your brother, didn’t you?”
My nose got all tingly as I hugged him and acted all cute, then snuck into the kitchen to grab a piece of his fried chicken. I grinned and showered him with compliments.
After dinner, when the family was sitting around having coffee and chatting, I told them about Carlo bit by bit.
My brother pinched my car in frustration, while Grandpa got so mad he threw his cane across the room.
“Grandpa, Adam, sorry for making you worry.”
Grandpa patted my shoulder, his usually serious face all soft and full of
concern.
“Kathryn, you’ve been through a lot. Don’t worry, it’s good to be home. Grandpa won’t let you go through any more trouble.”
My lips started to tremble. With my family around, all the sadness I’d been holding in just came pouring out, and I started crying really hard.
My brother hastily tried to comfort me. Then, he stepped away and called his secretary to cancel all the business deals between the Fermor Group and the Neller and Basom families, for good.
