Chapter 9 Engagement
“Kathryn, it’s not what you think. Let me explain!”
Carlo tried to follow me, but Jackson grabbed his wrist.
“Mr. Neller, a guy needs to have some self–respect, right?”
Jackson looked really serious. As he squeezed harder, Carlo winced in pain.
“I haven’t even talked to you. Who do you think you are? Kathryn is my girlfriend, so back off!”
“I’m Jackson and I’m dating Ms. Fermor. It’s not cool for you to hassle my girlfriend like this, Mr. Neller.”
Carlo was totally furious at this.
“Bullshit! Kathryn has been in love with me for seven years. Who are you to butt in? Do the smart thing and leave her alone. She’s mine!”
“Then, what have you been doing for those seven years? Why haven’t you married her yet? Mr. Neller, not everyone will stick around forever, especially a woman as amazing as her. What gives you the right to keep her waiting year after year without stepping up?”
Jackson’s words hit Carlo like a bunch of thorns.
Feeling totally overwhelmed by Jackson’s strong presence, Carlo just stood there, frozen and speechless.
After I went back inside, I massaged my temples and leaned back on the couch, deep in thought.

A little while later, Jackson came in.
I didn’t get up, just looked at him quietly from where I was.

Jackson walked right over and sat next to me, gently touching my cheek.
The nicer he was, the guiltier I felt.
After a moment of silence, I decided to tell him everything about my past with Carlo.
These were all real experiences, and as my future partner, he deserved to know.
But when I finished, Jackson didn’t seem surprised at all.
“Kathryn, I already knew all of this.”
I just sat there, totally shocked.
Jackson just gave a soft smile.
“Your brother filled me in. It’s not your fault. Your sincerity is really special. Anyone who doesn’t see that will regret it forever.
“Kathryn, you’re an amazing woman. Believe in yourself. I genuinely like you after spending time together. No rush. We’ve got all the time we
need.”
I looked at him for a long time, and suddenly felt tears welling up.
There really was someone who could understand how I truly felt.
“Jackson, how about we get engaged? In two years, when I finish my master’s degree, we can get married.”
His smile got even bigger as he pulled me into a hug, saying, “Alright.”

The two families got together soon after and picked a nice date to make the engagement official.
The Fermor family and the Kendall family had known each other for a long time, and becoming in–laws just made their connection even stronger.
Carlo hadn’t shown up since that day, but I still felt a bit uneasy.
Jackson noticed my worry and made sure to pick me up from campus every day.
Lately, he’s been traveling for work, and with my research project keeping me busy, I moved into campus housing.
I had no idea how Carlo found out I was studying here, but he tracked me down on campus.
He made a big show, covering the courtyard below my department building with flowers arranged in a huge heart shape.
Holding a giant bouquet of red roses, he shouted toward my classroom. “Kathryn, I love you! Will you marry me?”
My classmates, not knowing the whole story, cheered like crazy. “Marry him! Marry him!”
In a second, my anger just exploded.
