Cristofer watched her elegant retreating figure, his deep eyes swirling with a tumult of emotions. The impulse to follow her warred within him, a battle he fought fiercely but was losing.
She was like a breathtaking landscape: undeniably captivating, yet seemingly untouchable.
Meanwhile, Latoya absorbed Maryanne’s cutting words and a cruel plan began to take shape in her mind.
She thought, “Maryanne, don’t blame me when I strike.
“If you must place blame, place it on your own naivety.
“No, on the foolishness of both you and your ex–husband.”
The more they loved each other, the more they seemed to delight in hurting one another. Clearly, neither could truly leave the other, yet they resorted to the most childish methods to wound each other over trifles.
“Cris, let’s go,” Latoya murmured, linking her arm through his, her voice a soft caress.
Cristofer’s cold gaze fixed on her. “Latoya, remember your place. You can remain by my side, quietly. Just stay out of my affairs. Since you saved me during the fire, I’ll overlook what just transpired.‘
Latoya was taken aback, a flicker of unease crossing her mind.

“Cris, are you blaming me? I only said that to help you. Didn’t you see Maryanne’s arrogant attitude? She would never lift a finger for you,” Latoya said, lowering her head, a note of grievance creeping into her
voice.
She knew she had merely seized an opportunity during the fire; she had never possessed the courage to rush into danger to save someone.
Besides, he had been her fiancé, yet he chose Maryanne instead. She felt compelled, almost obligated, to reclaim him.
He was exceptional, the admiration of countless women.
Why did Maryanne deserve him?
This question was the driving force behind that dreadful scheme.

Emerging from the restroom, Maggie found Maryanne gone. Instead, she saw Cristofer and Latoya standing there.

“Hmm? Aren’t you one of Maryanne’s followers?” Latoya’s sharp eyes landed on Maggie,

Maggie, who hadn’t planned on engaging, stopped nonetheless. Upon hearing Latoya’s condescending remark, she studied Latoya closely. “Hey! You look fairly normal, but it seems your mind’s gone fuzzy, and your eyesight’s taken a hit too! What century are you living in? You’re so out of touch.”
Latoya was rendered speechless.
“You…” she sputtered, unable to form a coherent retort.
“Enough, stop the act. Even a trash bag puts on a better performance than you. Compared to our Boss, you’re barely worth a single strand of hair. And those schemes you pulled against her? Don’t think I’ve forgotten.”
With a final warning glare, Maggie spun around and briskly walked off
Latoya stamped her foot in frustration. “Cris…”
“Enough. Why did you provoke her?” He couldn’t shake the thought of Maryanne. She never attended events like this.
Even when he’d invited her, she’d always found an excuse.
Why did she come tonight?
How much was she hiding from him?
Seeing Cristofer’s darkening mood, Latoya wisely kept silent, though her hatred for Maryanne festered beneath the surface.
