Chapter 15
Mona’s voice was cold and calm. “Listen closely, Liza. From now on, if you dare accuse me of doing something I didn’t do–then I’ll actually do it. If I’m going to be blamed anyway, I may as well earn it.”
And with that, she turned and slammed the bathroom door behind her.
Eldon quickly carried Liza to her room. “Take a hot shower and change your clothes, or you’ll catch a cold,” he said, full of concern.
Liza returned a little while later, wrapped in a silk camisole that dipped low in the front, exposing half her chest.
Mona had hit the nail on the head–if Eldon wouldn’t touch her, she’d seduce him. If that didn’t work, she’d drug him. Once she got him into bed, he’d have no choice but to take responsibility.
“Eldon.” she murmured, her eyes still red from crying, voice trembling just enough to stir a man’s protective instinct.
Eldon sat on the sofa and looked at her. Her outfit barely covered anything.
Without a word, he picked up a blanket and gently draped it over her.
“Just now. Mona said she didn’t dunk your head under the water. Is that
true?”
Tears immediately welled up again. “So you believe her? Not me?”
Eldon’s heart softened in an instant. He pulled her into his arms, wiping her tears with a handkerchief.

“Don’t be silly. Of course I believe you.”
Liza took the opportunity to wrap her arms around his neck. “Then kiss me, Eldon.”
She closed her eyes and leaned in, lips parted, ready.
Eldon looked down at her. She was beautiful–any man would think so. But no matter how close she got, he felt. nothing.
Yet just the thought of Mona–if she were the one in his arms right now, looking at him like that–his body reacted immediately.
Liza noticed instantly. Her eyes flew open, hope flashing across her face. “Eldon, I’m clean. I’m ready. Don’t you want me?”
Instead, Eldon gently shifted her to the side, wrapped the towel more securely around her shoulders, and said quietly, “Liza, a woman should have a little self–respect. Get some rest, and don’t catch a cold. I’ll come visit another day.”
Before she could say a word, he stood and walked out.
Liza sat frozen in place.
‘He had a reaction–she’d felt it. So why did he leave?” she thought.
The more she thought about it, the angrier she got. She trashed the room in a fit of rage.
‘Ever since Mona came back, everything has changed. Eldon doesn’t want me anymore. Mona has to pay.”
‘She must’ve been sneaking around these past few nights–never coming home, always off doing God knows what. She has to be up to something indecent.‘

Back at the club, as soon as the manager ended the call, he turned and bowed slightly to the man lounging on the sofa.
“Sir, Ms. Morse is on her way.”
Tanner’s lips curled into a faint smirk. He gave a subtle glance to the man beside him.
The assistant stepped forward and handed the manager a check–for 3 thousand dollars.
“Make sure Mr. Hardin is well taken care of,” he said. “Do that, and you won’t go unrewarded.”
The manager tucked the check.
his jacket with a grin and launched
into a stream of compliments, practically calling Tanner his godfather.
Meanwhile, just after Mona left the house, Liza trailed her from a distance.
