Chapter21
She hurried to button up her blouse, but Waylon was quicker. He calmly buttoned it for her, one by one, then gently helped her sit back in her seat.
At that moment, his phone rang.
He answered the call, then turned to her. “Something’s come up at the office. I need to head back. Come with me–I’ll have someone take you home afterward.”
“That’s okay, Mr. Haley. Once we’re back in the city, I can catch a cab.”
That reminded her-she still owed him 300 dollars for the medical expenses.
“By the way, I haven’t paid you back for the last time. I can transfer it to you now.”
She reached for her phone–only to realize they hadn’t even added each other as contacts.
“Mr. Haley, can I add you?”
He pulled out his phone and accepted the request.
Mona quickly sent over the 300 dollars. But Waylon didn’t accept the transfer.
“I told you, one round of golf with me and we’re even. Think of it as your fee.”
Mona didn’t dare argue. When he made a decision, there was no changing

When they arrived at his office building, she said, “Mr. Haley, I can head ome from here.”
But just as she stepped out of the car, someone rushed over and spoke to Waylon in a low voice–it looked urgent.
It’s cold out,” he said to her. “Come inside. Wait in the lobby. I’ll send someone to take you home shortly.”
He wasn’t asking. Mona had no choice but to follow him inside.
He went straight to the elevator, disappearing upstairs with his assistant.

Mona found a seat on a couch near the front desk. She debated leaving on her own–but worried if she disappeared, the Waylon sent wouldn’t be able to find her. Then again, staying felt awkward. He was clearly busy, and had probably forgotten all about her.
In the end, she decided to wait a little while. If no one came, she’d leave and text him later.
She had just sat down when a sharply dressed man walked into the lobby and approached the receptionist. “Excuse me, is Mr. Haley in today? I have something urgent to discuss with him.”
The man was none other than Eldon–the same Eldon she had once loved to the point of madness three years ago.
The receptionist gave him a once–over. He was good–looking, well- dressed, and extremely polite.
“Do you have an appointment, sir?”
“No.”

“Then I’m sorry, I can’t notify him without one.”
“Is Mr. Haley in today?” he pressed.
“He is,” she replied.
“I’ll wait, then. May I sit over there?”
He gestured to the seating area–right where Mona was.
“Of course,” the receptionist said. “That space is for waiting guests.”

Eldon headed toward the couch. When he got closer and finally noticed Mona sitting there, he froze.
Then his expression shifted, turning stern. “Mona? What are you doing here? Do you even know where this is? How dare you show up here?”
“If you can be here, why can’t I?” Mona leaned back against the wall, crossed one leg over the other, and stared at him coolly.
Eldon sat down next to her and lowered his voice. “Don’t cause a scene.

“And if I don’t? What are you going to do–throw me out?” she shot back.
Suddenly, she didn’t feel like leaving anymore.

The Morse family’s entire business was propped up by the projects Eldon handed them. If he went down, so would they.
And once Ulby’s wealthiest man lost his footing, no one would dare shield the Morse family anymore. The surveillance footage they destroyed back then–there’d be ways to recover it.
With that, and the recordings of those people admitting they framed her, she could take everything to court.
Everyone in the Morse family–except Addie–would end up behind bars.
And when that day came, Mona would make sure their real estate and assets landed in her hands.
They owed her. Three years ago, they threw her in prison–now, she’d return the favor, exactly the same way.
Eldon lowered his voice. “This isn’t the place to talk. Come outside with me.”
He grabbed Mona’s wrist, trying to pull her with him.
But Mona snapped her arm back and gripped his instead, voice sharp. “Don’t touch me–unless you want to regret it.”
