“Darling.” Alexander stepped out of a Bentley.
Lately, he’d been picking me up from work every day.

I walked over and linked my arm through his. “Honey, there’s this guy who keeps bothering me. I’m scared.”
The tall Alexander walked past Theodore, took my hand, and pulled me behind him protectively, asking, “Who are you? What do you want with my wife?”
This scene cut Theodore deeply.
His eyes widened, and his outstretched hand froze in mid–air.
Theodore said, “I’m Theodore, her former fiancé.”
Alexander said, “If I remember correctly, didn’t you die? After soaking in the river for so long, how come you haven’t rotted yet?”
Theodore clenched his fists. “What are you so smug about? You and she are just in a business marriage.”
“A business marriage works just fine. If a business marriage lets me marry her, what’s wrong with that?” Alexander sneered and continued, “Besides, what are you anyway? Other than making her cry, what else can you do?”

[Let me tell you something funny. Theodore only has the capital to go against Alexander because he’s supposed to take over the Brooks family business. Now that Chloe won’t marry him, with his tiny, crappy media company, crushing him would be as easy as squashing an ant for Alexander.]

Theodore raised his fist.
But before he could throw the punch, the Thompson family’s bodyguards had him restrained.
I looked at him with nothing but mild disgust in my eyes and said, “Please don’t show up in front of me again. You make me sick.”
