Carl didn’t speak for a long time. After a while, he ran a hand back through his hair in frustration. “Kid, when did you start saying one thing and meaning another? You treat me like a stranger now; you think all I see is profit?”
Yunice panicked and quickly said, “That’s not what I meant…”
Carl said, “Then just say it–you’re backing Wyatt; you want to see if I’ll help, right?”
Yunice stared at him, stunned. Carl frowned. “It’s been years, and you’ve lost that confidence you had as a kid. Is it because I’ve been too busy with business these past few years and haven’t stayed in touch, so now you feel distant from me?”
A sting rose at the tip of Yunice’s nose.
She couldn’t take that gamble–couldn’t bet on human nature, on family ties, or on personal gain. The people closest to her had all tried to use her. How could I trust anyone else?
Carl lit a cigarette and didn’t speak again for a long time. When Yunice walked out of the lounge holding the document, her eyes were red.
Owen, who’d been pacing outside in a panic, spotted her immediately and rushed over. “Yunny, did you see Mr. Carl? How did he treat you?”
Relationships could fade. Ever since Owen’s father passed away, he hadn’t kept in touch with Carl. He didn’t even know if the man still cared about old bonds.
Yunice said, “Mr. Carl will be out in a minute. Ask him yourself.”
Owen lit up. “Okay.”
He looked nervous and mentally ran through the speech he’d prepared beforehand.
When he finished rehearsing it in his head, he happened to notice the file in Yunice’s hands and asked instinctively, “What did you and Mr. Carl talk about?”
Yunice didn’t answer right away; instead, she gestured toward the lounge and reminded him, “Mr. Carl’s coming.”
Sure enough, Owen’s attention was pulled toward the door. He walked over quickly to greet Carl.
“Mr. Carl!” Owen raised his hand and greeted him just as Carl stepped out.
Carl paused, then broke into a warm smile. “Well, look who it is!”
He was still smiling as he gave Owen a once–over.
It had been years. Owen even spread his arms with a grin and said, “Mr. Carl, have I grown up or what?”
Carl nodded. “You have. That snot–nosed brat from back then has grown into a man–already out chasing women, I see.”
“Chasing women?” Owen followed Carl’s gaze to his collar–there was a lipstick smudge..
It hit him right away, it must’ve rubbed off earlier when Elsie had cried in his arms.
“Oh, that’s a misunderstanding, Mr. Carl. Elsie got that on me by accident,” he said with a smile. “You probably haven’t met her yet–she’s my sister, Yunny’s biological sister!”
At the mention of Elsie, Owen couldn’t hold back; he really wanted Carl to meet her. “Mr. Carl, Elsie’s even more well- behaved and sensible than Yunny. She’s at the banquet today, too. Let me call her over to say hello.”
He pulled out his phone, convinced that once Carl saw Elsie, he’d be won over instantly.
But Carl raised his hand to stop him. “No need.”
Owen froze.

Carl said, “You’ve grown up now–found your own way and your own voice. I’m happy for you.”
Then he patted Owen’s shoulder and walked away.
Owen hurried after him. “Mr. Carl, actually I-”
Carl cut him off. “A real man goes after what he wants himself. I believe in you.”
Then he raised his fist and gave a quick, encouraging gesture.

Owen swallowed the words that had been right on the tip of his tongue. He felt like he’d just hit a wall–soft but unyielding. He stood there, deflated. Why was Carl so dismissive with me? Have things really changed that much?
Meanwhile, Huajing the bunny girl kept pace with Carl. She’d been by his side for years and could pick up on even the slightest shift in his mood.
Despite the smile on Carl’s face, Huajing knew–he was already running out of patience.
Carl glanced around the crowded banquet hall and said coldly, “Which one’s Elsie?”
Huajing swept Kelvin.”
the room with a calm gaze, then lifted her chin slightly. “Third table on the right, pink dress, talking to Mr.
Carl’s sharp eyes followed her cue–and landed on the girl. His expression darkened.
Meanwhile, Yunice and Wyatt waited in a side room.
Yunice unfolded the file and looked at the signature page. It was still blank. Carl hadn’t signed; he hadn’t agreed to anything.
Yunice said, “Mr. Carl told me to bring you with me next time to discuss it.”
