“I won’t. I’m going to call Alex in,” Amber said, making as if to leave.
Hudson shouted, “Stop. Don’t you dare. Get back here, Amber. If anyone sees me like this, you’re dead. Do you hear me? Hurry up and grab me a bottle of water so I can rinse my eyes; there’s soap in them.”
Amber stomped her foot in annoyance. “Are you for real? At a time like this, that’s what you’re worried about?”
She walked over, pulled a bottle of water out of her backpack, opened it, and handed it to him. “Here, hurry up and wash your eyes.”
Hudson splashed some water on his face and finally managed to open his eyes. He saw Amber standing off to the side, her pink backpack slung over her shoulder, quietly scrolling through her phone.
A wave of shame and helpless indignation hit him. He tried to get up, but his butt was wedged tightly in the brand–new fish tank. No matter how hard he struggled, he just couldn’t pull himself free, and his face swelled red with the effort.
An ill–timed laugh slipped out.
Amber just couldn’t hold back her laughter anymore. ‘I really want to take a picture,‘ she thought.
“What’s so funny? Stop laughing. Amber, turn around. You little brat, I went out of my way to bring you your exam ticket today, and you can’t even say thank you?
“And now you’re just standing there laughing at me?” Hudson snapped.
Hudson’s mood was impossible to put into words. He was so mortified he wanted to crawl into a hole; well, technically, his butt was already stuck in one.
“I didn’t ask you to bring it,” Amber retorted. “And I’m not stupid. I printed out a few extra copies myself.
“Anyway, I picked up these cakes from the bakery on my way here. It’s compensation for you getting zapped by the security guard earlier.”
Even though she said he was making a fuss over nothing, Amber still went out of her way to buy the cakes as a thank–you.
“No–” Mia sputtered, completely lost for words.
Amber set the cakes down. “Fine, I’m leaving.”
Hudson hurriedly shouted, “No. You can’t.” There was no way he could let anyone else see him like this; he had to get out of this embarrassing situation.
With just the two of them in the room, he could only turn to Amber for help.
Taking a deep breath, he said, “Hey, Amber, help me get this fish tank off me, will you? Just take it as your way of saying thanks. I ran a bunch of red lights just to bring you your exam ticket today.”
Amber hesitated for a bit, but finally took off her backpack and set it aside.
“Alright, since you’re looking so pathetic, I’ll be merciful and lend you a hand,” she said, putting on an air of mock generosity.
She hadn’t really looked at Hudson before. Now that she saw the state he was in, she couldn’t hold back a laugh.
“Quit laughing. Stop it,” Hudson snapped. “Amber, if you dare spill a single word about what happened today, I’ll make sure you regret it. Did you hear me?”
Hudson was about to blow a fuse, practically jumping up and down in rage, gritting his teeth as he shot her a deadly warning glare. Amber’s temper flared right back. “Wow, that’s your attitude after I help you? You know what? Not only am I going to tell everyone, I’m making sure I have proof, too.”
As she spoke, Amber whipped out her phone and started snapping away, the shutter clicking nonstop.
“Ah, Amber, stop. Stop it. No pictures. I mean it, don’t you dare.” Hudson yelled, his voice full of panic. “Amber, I said no pictures. I swear, if you don’t quit it, I’m going to lose it.”
