Chapter 18
Adrienne’s steps froze. The woman seized the opportunity to
grab a flower vase from the table and hurled it at her.
“Die, you bitch!”
Her health was already poor. She passed out immediately.
In a haze, she saw a figure running toward her, but thought it
must be a hallucination.
She didn’t have the energy to look. Something warm was
trickling down her forehead, blurring her vision.
When she woke up again, she was in a hospital.
Willard was sitting by the bed, his expression grim. “I didn’t
expect her to follow you. This is on me.”
He looked tired. “I haven’t kept anyone outside, but she won’t
believe me. I’ve explained it a thousand times. Every time, she
throws a fit. I couldn’t take it anymore and asked for a divorce.
That only made her more convinced I had someone. She’s
caused scenes at three different companies already. That’s why I
left the Melendez Group and ended up where I am now.”
Chapter 18
No wonder. Adrienne had always wondered why someone
once in the top ranks of the Melendez Group would end up at a
smaller firm. Now she understood.
“Mr. Gibson, did you bring me to the hospital?”
Willard looked puzzled. “The police called me. Someone at the
Melendez Group must’ve reported it!”
Adrienne nodded. She vaguely remembered seeing Garrett
before she passed out.
What a joke. She didn’t even love him anymore, but in a
moment of crisis, he was still the one she thought of.
“Adrienne, I paid for your hospital bill and transferred 8,000
dollars for emotional damages. Let’s settle this privately, okay?”
Adrienne wasn’t someone who nitpicked. She could see the
hopelessness in Willard’s eyes.
Back then, Willard had been full of drive. At just thirty–six, he’d
reached an executive position at the Melendez Group. But only
three years later, he seemed like a different person. He was
worn down not just physically, but emotionally.
It all made sense now.
Chapter 18
“Mr. Gibson, how is your wife now?”
“She’s being held at the police station. They’re waiting for you to
wake up.”
Adrienne nodded and glanced at her phone. The money had
indeed arrived.
She was short on cash. That was a decent amount.
“Alright, I’ll tell the police we’ll settle privately. But please tell
your wife that there’s nothing between us. I’m just your
subordinate.”
Willard frowned, rubbing his aching head. “If she could listen to
reason, we wouldn’t be in this mess. Just stay away from her
from now on.”
Adrienne’s head was wrapped in gauze. It wasn’t a serious
injury, and the compensation was good. Strangely, she even felt
it was worth it.
By evening, she was discharged. She checked housing listings on
her phone.
She had about 10 grand in total now. She’d need to be careful
with her spending.
Chapter 18
Standing at the hospital entrance, she realized it was too late to
look for apartments. She’d have to make do with a hotel for the
night.
Just as she was about to call a ride, a car slowly pulled up in
front of her. The window rolled down, and a familiar voice
called out.
“Adrienne?”
“Theo?”
It was Garrett’s older brother, Theodore Melendez.
Theodore got out of the car. Seeing the gauze on her forehead,
his brows knitted together. He reached out to touch it, but she
dodged.
“What happened? Garrett didn’t come with you?”
Theodore was gentle and always treated her well. She trusted
him.
“Theo, Garrett, and I are getting a divorce.”
A flicker of something crossed Theodore’s eyes. He opened the
car door. “Get in. Do you have somewhere to stay?”
