Mason impatiently pulled out his phone, swiftly maneuvering through its settings:
“Fine, I’ll transfer the money to you right now. Take it and disappear from my life. I never want to see you again.”
“My love has always been for Sophia. Those three years with you were just an escape from my feelings for her.”
“This amount is enough for you to start over, find a mate worthy of you, and stop wasting time on me.”
Suddenly, his movements paused.

“Your card has been frozen? Have you become a freeloader?”
In that moment, I understood everything.
He was attempting to transfer funds to the old bank card I’d once used for financial aid. Since marrying, I’ve relied on the card my mate gave me, and it’s perfectly normal for the old one to be frozen, isn’t it?
It seems my image in his eyes is less than favorable. Once, I was viewed as a gold–digging she–wolf, both poor and pathetic, and now I’ve somehow upgraded to freeloading.
“I’m not lacking money,” Lreplied in a flat, disinterested tone, unwilling to explain
further.

His voice, however, turned icy:
“You’ve sunk to rummaging through trash bins and still refuse assistance?”
Confused, I furrowed my brow:
“We broke up five years ago. It seems unnecessary for strangers to offer help, doesn’t it?”
After a moment’s pause, I added:
“Really, don’t send the money. I don’t need it.”
If my mate discovered someone transferring money to me, he would undoubtedly misunderstand. Should he uncover my past with Mason, jealousy would consume him

for months.
Mason appeared taken aback, then he let out a soft chuckle:
“Wendy, you’ve misunderstood. I’m sending the money out of pity; rest assured, I hold no feelings for you.”
After speaking, he observed me closely, a complex expression in his eyes as he regarded my disheveled appearance:
“Seeing you like this, I wonder if the breakup has affected you… I suppose I do bear some
I responsibility.”
“Refusing the money–is it intended to leave me with guilt forever?”

Sophia stepped in, soothing him with gentle
reassurance:
“Mason, she’s a top student at the Wolf Pack Medical Academy. With her skills, finding a job won’t be difficult.”
“Her situation is entirely her own doing- laziness and lack of ambition.”
“You could see it back then. Despite her family’s poverty, she chose the easy route of accepting Old Luna’s aid rather than working
dar
part–time, proof she’s both poor and lazy…”
“Sophia!” My wolf bared its fangs internally at her. “I repaid the aid with interest long ago. Please watch your words.”
Taken aback by my retort, Sophia sulkily

“Wendy, you dismissed the $1.43 back then, yet you won’t find such an amount in ten dumpsters now!”

“Even if you’ve sunk to begging, don’t think I’ll take pity and let you back.”
For a moment I was speechless.
After all these years, does he still believe it’s about that $1.43?
Years ago, Sophia vanished from the wolf pack without a word, her abrupt departure nearly breaking Mason’s spirit, leaving him desolate and barely clinging to life.
I took care of him out of gratitude to Old Luna Julia for her aid.

messages.
On our third anniversary, he sent me the infuriating $1.43–a clear signal to sever our bond.
The irony was that I still clung to hope. Only Sophia’s message finally persuaded my wolf to let go. Didn’t he realize that?
Looking at his firm grip on my wrist, I spoke calmly:
“Alpha Mason, my life is good now, and I’ve never considered seeking you out again. Rest assured.”
I attempted to pull my hand away, but he held fast.

“I’m married now. My mate’s temper isn’t the best, and should he see us entangled like
this, it would bode poorly for us all.”
Abruptly, he released me, shock written across his face:
“You dare form a mate bond with someone else behind my back?!”
