Chapter 23
Octavia’s daring to provoke me now because she knows the money hasn’t cleared yet.
She thinks I won’t make a scene.
Let her enjoy the quiet while it lasts.
Octavia kept poking at me, hoping I’d finally snap and make a scene–because the first one
to lose control, loses the game.
But what really puzzled me was how she could endure silently for three whole years, keeping tabs on our lives just to win over Alpha Knox.
She’s clearly someone who knows how to play the long game–so why is she suddenly losing
her cool now?
Alpha Knox already promised to make her his
mate.
So why did she lose it just because he came home once to spend time with his daughter?
It didn’t take long for Aurora to give me the
answer.
Chapter 23
“Alpha attended a meeting last week,” she said.
“And once the White Wolves heard he was single
again, they started chasing him like crazy.”
“Octavia found out–and completely lost it.
She’s caused a scene in the office more than
once now. It’s honestly embarrassing.”
As I listened to Aurora rant and try to comfort
me at the same time, I was left speechless.
When I hung up, everything finally made sense.
Octavia thought that once I broke the mate bond with Knox, she’d smoothly take my place
and become the new Luna.
But she didn’t expect that the moment Alpha
Knox was officially single, suitors would come swarming in–and every one of them had better qualifications than she did.
Her only “strength” was playing the pitiful,
fragile type. But now, with the pressure closing
in, she couldn’t keep up the act or think
straight.
She needed to use Knox’s favoritism to mark
her territory, to scare off any other women who
dared to look his way.
Chapter 23
From the way Aurora talked, this wasn’t the first
time she’d thrown a fit.
Tonight, when Alpha Knox came to see our daughter, it was probably because Octavia had pushed him too far again.
And Octavia knew she’d gone overboard lately -so she tried to provoke me with those photos, hoping I’d blow up, while she got to play the “understanding” one and shift the blame.
I had planned to ignore her.
But since she’s so desperate to humiliate herself, I might as well let her have what she
wants.
So I invited Alpha Knox out to dinner–at the same place where we had our very first date.
He only hesitated for a second before saying
yes.
I wore a dress that looked almost exactly like
the one I’d worn back then and greeted him
with a warm smile.
Everything felt just like it had the first time.
Chapter 23
Same table. Same two people.
And yet… everything had changed.
He was no longer the husband who would mark my neck again and again and say he loved me.
And I was no longer the Beatrice who would give up everything for him without question.
I ordered all the same dishes we had on that
first date.
Alpha Knox took one bite and put his chopsticks down.
“Tastes different,” he said.
I took another bite and sighed,
“That’s probably because you’ve had too much luxury these past few years. You’ve forgotten what home tastes like.”
He was quiet for a while, then finally muttered with some guilt,
“Beatrice… I’m sorry.”
Leave a bitter smile
Chapter 23
“I guess I was the fool waiting in place, knowing full well you’d already moved on.”
Alpha Knox softened his tone.
“Actually, about me and Octavia…”
I held up a hand to stop him.
“Knox, I don’t want to hear it. What I do want is for you to finish transferring the rest of the
money.
Because, just like you, I want to start a new life.”
Alpha Knox looked at me with a complicated expression and said,
“Beatrice, I know you’re only here for the money–but I’m still really glad you came.
No one wants to see you happy more than I do.
I’ll make sure you get the rest of it soon.
And if you or our daughter ever need anything,
don’t hesitate to reach out.”
After he left, I went to pay the bill and slipped
orous red envelope
Chapter 24
The table, the food, the atmosphere-
everything had been arranged by me on
purpose.
I wanted Alpha Knox to feel guilty.
Because when a man feels something- that’s when he becomes most agreeable to
