That day, I got out of work with Sonia as usual.
She had opened up to me more lately, and I wanted to find out the real reason she died in our past life.
Everyone thought I pushed her off the building. But I didn’t.
I didn’t even touch a corner of her clothes.
She jumped on her own, crying.
I wondered if something had happened in her family that made her want to die.
“Sonia, if something’s wrong, you have to tell me. If you’re in trouble, let me help you.”
She froze, then her eyes turned red. Something was wrong.
She was just about to speak when a group of thugs rushed out of the alley, carrying metal pipes.
They were clearly out for trouble.
I had learned some self–defense as a kid, so I barely managed to hold them off.
Sonia wasn’t so lucky.
One of them swung at her, and without thinking, I jumped in front of her.

Chapter 5
When I came to, my back and the back of my head were burning with pain.
I was covered in mud, but the scene in front of me made me forget the pain.
Sonia was lying naked beside me.
“Hey, Sonia? Are you okay?”
My voice shook. I scrambled to find a phone.
I just wanted to call Zaiden–fast.
But the phone was shattered. No signal, no power.
Then a blinding light hit my face.
I flinched, squinting.

Police sirens wailed as Zaiden’s furious voice rang out.
Someone shoved me hard. I hit the steps.

Zaiden’s eyes were bloodshot.
I stared at him, stunned. And then I got it.
He misunderstood.
“Zaiden, no–it wasn’t me.”
He picked Sonia up in his arms.
“You’re holding the phone and still lying?! Delete those photos right now!

I stared after him, tears filling my eyes.
“It really… wasn’t me…”
My strength drained away, and darkness took over again.
