Chapter9
His assistant went pale.
Cold sweat drenched the back of his collar almost instantly.
He could already imagine himself being fired on the spot by Julian Lancaster.
Dragging his feet toward the VIP Private Suite, he arrived just in time to see Julian gently patting Bianca Sterling’s back, having just lulled her to sleep.
“Mr. Lancaster, about Miss Wynn…”
Julian raised a finger to his lips, signaling him to stay quiet.
He tucked the blanket around Bianca, then gave his assistant a subtle nod, indicating they should
talk outside.
But just as he took a step, someone tugged at the hem of his coat.
Julian looked down and met Bianca’s reddened eyes. “Julian… are you going to see Miss Wynn? Does that mean you don’t want me anymore?”
He didn’t quite understand where her sudden insecurity came from, but still softened his voice. “Don’t worry. I just need to clear something up.”
Clear what?
Who Charlotte Wynn was?
Or what exactly had existed between them?
Bianca’s heart was in turmoil, swamped with questions.
Had Julian remembered something?
If he really went to find Charlotte… would he still look at her the way he did now?
She didn’t dare to think further.
Her brows furrowed, and her voice trembled. “My head hurts…”
Julian saw through the act almost instantly, but he let her fall into his arms anyway, gently stroking her back as he pressed the call button for the doctor.

It wasn’t the first time.
Every time Julian so much as hinted at finding Charlotte, Bianca would feign illness to divert his
attention.
And after so many times, Julian finally saw the pattern.
Bianca was afraid of Charlotte.
But if Charlotte was just an old childhood friend, why would Bianca be so threatened?
The thought tangled his mind even further.
At one point, a ridiculous notion crossed his mind, one he immediately tried to suppress.
If he had truly loved Charlotte once… would she have ever allowed him to end up with Bianca?
He quietly brushed aside the strands of hair on Bianca’s forehead, watching her trembling lashes.
She was clearly wide awake.
Bianca was supposed to be his one true love.
So what would it matter even if he got answers from Charlotte?
All it would do was hurt Bianca.
And that wasn’t worth it.
So Julian made up his mind.
He never brought up Charlotte again, treating Bianca with the same tender care as before.
But the more he forced himself to be logical, the more his mind wandered beyond his control.
If Charlotte really had been the one he loved in the past…
then what did falling for Bianca mean?
He drifted again.
Bianca, sensing it, bit her lip and dug her nails into her palm.
Then, with a forced little whine, she said:
“Julian, you’re not listening to me again! Do you not love me anymore?”

Julian snapped back to attention and pressed his lips together. “Sorry.”
“Then what did I just say?” she pouted.
He hesitated, then shook his head.
“I said I want to go see that International Opera Show. The one with the award–winning European troupe?”
Bianca huffed. “You better pay attention, because after the show I’m quizzing you on the plot. If you fail… you’re banned from kissing me for a week. That’s your punishment for spacing out!”
She smirked inwardly.
At least this way, Julian would have to stay focused and not let his mind wander.
But when the performance reached its emotional peak, Bianca glanced sideways,
Julian was staring blankly at the stage again.
Her face darkened.
Onstage, the male lead sat alone on a garden bench after the heroine’s departure, delivering a quiet
monologue.
“Before I met you, I wasn’t sorrowful, nor did I sigh.
When I saw you, I didn’t lose my mind.
But in the endless days without you, something inside me began to ache.
In the echo of that longing, I began to wonder,
Was this friendship?
Or… was it love?”
Suddenly, Julian gripped Bianca’s hand with such force that she gasped in pain.
“Ow, Julian!”
He blinked, finally pulled back to reality. Bianca forced a smile. “This opera’s awful.‘
Then she changed the subject abruptly. “Oh, by the way… I’ve been having nightmares lately. How about we go spend a few days at St. Elora Monastery? I heard their blessing charms are really

effective. Maybe one will stop the dreams.”
It was a sudden and awkward shift, but Bianca didn’t care.
As long as it kept Julian away from anything that might stir memories, especially Charlotte, she’d
do whatever it took.
Julian was silent for a moment.
He knew he’d been off lately. But still, he nodded. “Alright.”
That night, before they left, Julian waited until Bianca had fallen asleep.
Moonlight streamed through the window, and for some reason… the scent of wisteria filled his
thoughts.
As if guided by something he couldn’t explain, he got in his car and drove to the Lancaster Estate.
He didn’t go see Charlotte.
So technically, he wasn’t breaking his word to Bianca.
The estate was still under renovation after the fire, but the shrub in the Courtyard Garden remained
untouched.
It was winter now. The shrub lay bare and quiet.
But he remembered it clearly, when he’d first returned home, the whole courtyard had been covered in wisteria, and there’d been a swing beneath the vines.
Charlotte…
Julian turned toward the direction of her old room, and his chest suddenly felt hollow.
