The bouquet of roses he’d brought slipped from his limp hand and hit the floor with a soft thud, scattering bright petals everywhere.

His Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed hard, clinging to the last thread of hope, his voice trembling with a desperate plea.

“Was everything you did for me all your kindness, all those notes, all your help–was it all just about the money?”

“Tell me! Was any of it real–your kindness, the things you did for me? Or was it all just for the money?”
