Easton stormed up the stage in just a few steps and grabbed my hand.
“Wanda, haven’t you caused enough of a scene? Come down with me.”
Gavin shoved him back and stepped forward to shield me.
“She’s my wife. What do you think you’re doing?”
Easton’s bloodshot eyes held contempt as he spat, “Wife? Buddy, you’re just a prop! She’s using you to get to me! Wake up, man. You’ve been played!”
Then, he turned to me, his voice suddenly softening. “Alright, Wanda, that’s enough. Come with me now, and I’ll let the whole prank slide.”
Gavin’s expression darkened. “You’ve said enough. I tolerated you because you’re her friend. But if you don’t get off this stage right now, I’ll call security. This is our wedding,
not a prank!”
I tugged on Gavin’s sleeve gently and said in a quiet voice, “Sorry, Gavin. It’s my fault. I should’ve made things clearer to him earlier.”
Then, I looked Easton in the eye and said firmly, “Take a good look at the guests sitting down there. Do I look like I’m here to pull a prank on you? You’re the one who needs to wake up!”
Gavin squeezed my hand and said softly, “It’s alright. We’ll just take this as a little scene to
spice up the wedding.”
His eyes were full of warmth, and for a moment, it felt like I was walking on air.
The sudden happiness left me lightheaded.
All those years I spent trailing behind Easton, I had experienced the heartbreak of falling from cloud nine more times than I could count–just like the day we graduated from college.

He called me out of the blue, asking me to meet him at the amusement park.
I rushed there, heart full of hope, to see fireworks lighting up the sky while Easton walked
toward me in a sharp suit, looking deeply affectionate.
But instead of stopping, he walked straight past me.

When I turned around in confusion, I saw Tina standing there in a beautiful dress, smiling sweetly at him.
They held hands as they passed me, and he whispered, “This is my 35th confession. Once we graduate, I won’t get another chance. Don’t forget to light more fireworks later, no
matter what!”
They embraced under the dazzling display while I got burned by a stray spark and ended up in the hospital.
Afterward, he barely glanced at the thick bandages on my arm and instead snapped, “Tina still turned me down, and it’s all your fault! If the fireworks hadn’t stopped at the worst time, she would’ve said yes!
“I’m about to graduate. How am I supposed to keep chasing her now?”
The anesthetic had numbed my arm, but it couldn’t dull the pain in my
heart.
