Jackson scoffed. “The Jenkins family, he muttered. “They’re nothing but garbage” As if anyone would actually be swayed by their so–called goodwill.
Ryan stepped forward, ready to say something, but before he could, Janie locked her gaze on Xena and said, “Are you sure about that?”
Xena froze, her confidence wovering under Janie’s steady stare. Regret washed over her in waves..
She should’ve never approached Janie in the first place. Now, with Jackson solidly backing her, Janie had no reason to hold back. Xena was worried that Janie would say something damaging–like cutting ties with the family.

Janie pretended to think it over before giving a bright, almost taunting smile. “Alright, if you say so. Just don’t regret it later”
Emily chimed in with disdain, Janie, don’t rush into it. This is a big deal-an opportunity most people would kill for.”
Jason jumped in to back her up. “Yeah, exactly! If Xena says she’ll deliver, she means it. You should really think this through”
Jackson’s glare shot their way, cold enough to make them immediately clam up.
David smirked. “Why don’t you two just mind your own business?”
Emily and Jason looked away, their faces stiff as they forced polite smiles.
But Janie didn’t spare them so much as a glance. Her focus stayed on Xena. “Are you sure you want me to say it? Don’t come crying to me afterward.”
Xena’s chest tightened. Her panic overflowed, wishing she could immediately rush to cover Janie’s mouth.
Xena wondered. What is Janie planning to do? Reveal my true parentage?
Her hands trembled as she tried to keep her voice steady. “Janie… maybe we should talk about this in private? There’s no need to take up everyone’s time.”
