Chapter 290
“I was afraid you’d hang up.” Julian seemed to be desperately trying to hold back his coughing, his voice lower than usual as it came through the phone.
If she listened carefully, there was even a hint of something vaguely resembling grievance in his tone.
Rosalie went speechless.
Julian, receiving no response, felt a bit uneasy, and a wave of anxiety surged from his chest.
It seemed like he was afraid he had said something wrong that had made Rosalie angry, and he became flustered, trying to salvage the situation. This cautious and nervous feeling wasn’t new to him.
From the initial disbelief to now, he had gradually gotten used to it; it hadn’t been that long.
Julian bitterly laughed inside, not sure whether he was laughing at himself for deserving it or at the turn of fate, that now, it was his turn.
“You… you can’t come see me?” He repeated it softly.
Just hearing those words, if she didn’t know it was Julian, the aloof and distant person, Rosalie might have imagined how pitiful and humble he
must have looked when saying them.
But when she pictured Julian’s face–the one always cold and aloof–it just seemed so out of place.
Just thinking about it, Rosalie could hardly bear it. But in the end, she still didn’t agree, though she rejected him more politely, “I’m busy. I probably won’t have time to visit Mr. Galloway.”
Actually, she didn’t really understand why Julian was doing this. If he was seeing something of Roseanne in her, it wasn’t necessary. After all, Roseanne had come back already.
And from Roseanne’s words, she could tell that those two had probably made up.
So she couldn’t understand why Julian didn’t look for Roseanne and instead insisted on having her visit him.
She didn’t want to have any more personal involvement with Julian, and she didn’t want Roseanne to always come around in front of her just because of him. In this lifetime, she didn’t want any further connection with these two people.
Whether they get married or break up, she didn’t want to be involved anymore,
Seeing Rosalie refuse, Julian wasn’t surprised. Or rather, when he made the request, he had already prepared himself for rejection, but he was still disappointed.
…Okay, that’s fine. He had wanted to add, “I’ll wait until you have time,” but after thinking about it, he didn’t say it out loud, feeling like saying it would only be self–deprecating.
“Okay, I’ll hang up, Rosalie said, and without hesitation, she really hung up the phone, not a second of doubt.
Julian lowered his eyelids to hide the strange emotions in his eyes, listening to the beeping on the other end, letting out a bitter laugh.
He realized how he never noticed before that when Rosalie became heartless, she was truly heartless,
He suddenly remembered what his grandmother Beth had said to him that day: “Rosalie seems easy to talk to, but when she makes up her mind, she’s tougher than anyone.
“Someone who loved you so much would decide to give you up, it’s like cutting a piece of flesh from her own heart. If she’s that harsh on herself, what makes you think she’ll soften towards you?”
Julian’s mind kept replaying what Beth had said to him that day.
He told Beth she didn’t understand, but in reality, he was the one who didn’t understand.
Everything he was going through now was exactly what Beth had predicted.
