Chapter 9 The Favoured One
Otherwise, everyone in the city would say that she wasn’t sensible.
Moreover, if she willingly states that she would give the money to Eliza, Bobby also wouldn’t put any blame on their heads.
This really was quite the calculated move.
“Don’t you think so too, Miah? Hmm?” Grandma Sampson asked, putting her on the spot.
The Sampsons thought that Miah would reply with a simple “yes” when under so much peer pressure. However, it was at this moment that Barry took out another result slip.
“I also have Miah’s results with me…”
“Miah’s results?”
At the thought of this, Eliza burst into laughter without even looking at it.
“I’ve already told you, Miah, it’s normal if you can’t catch up with your studies seeing as you’ve just returned from the countryside. But regardless, you should still have a proper learning attitude!
“Handing in your paper after 30 minutes. How could you possibly obtain good results with this kind of attitude!”
Eliza’s assuredness made everyone nod their heads in agreement with what she had said.
“She really handed in the paper in half an hour? This young lady truly is useless.”
“Even if she doesn’t know the answers, she should still attempt all the questions at the very least. Handing in her paper early—where did she find such self-confidence?”
“Bringing back someone as useless as her would only be an embarrassment.”
“Wait, everyone, you’re mistaken.” Barry interrupted everyone.
Holding up the result slip, she said, “Miah scored 498 marks in the short span of 30 minutes. See for yourselves!”
She was short of two marks for the final essay section.
But she got full marks for all the other sections.
498 marks!
Her final score was a few dozen marks higher than Eliza, who had consistently been at the top of her grade.
Eliza, feeling as though she was hallucinating, suddenly felt unsteady on her feet.
“No, it’s impossible… No one in the history of Eastside University has ever been able to score 498 marks. She cheated! Miah must have cheated!”
“Have you lost your smarts, Eliza?” Miah, who had been silent the entire time, walked over with a smile.
“In one sentence, you said that no one in the history of the university has ever scored so highly, then immediately in the next, you’re so certain that I cheated?
“If I did, who did I cheat off? Don’t tell me I copied the answers from you who only scored 432 marks?”
Eliza was so frantic she could cry. “I don’t believe you! You must have searched for the answers online using your phone!”
This time, even Ms. Barry couldn’t bear to hear anymore. “The Eastside lecturers create the exam questions on their own each time, it’s not possible for someone to find the answers from the internet.”
“How could she still not understand this when she’s completed her primary and secondary education under Eastside’s schools over the years?
“It’s clear that she’s desperately grasping at straws because she’s agitated by Miah’s unexpected results.” Barry thought.
Miah’s results were indeed beyond everyone’s expectations, but Eliza’s reaction was even more eye-opening.
Bobby leisurely took a sip of champagne as he observed the scene unfold from his vantage point upstairs.
Emilio could tell that the Sampsons intended to make things difficult for Miah today. “Are you going to go down and help Miah now, Mr. Gallagher?” he asked while looking at Bobby’s face to gauge his reaction.
“Does she look like she needs any help?” Bobby replied.
“Ah…” Emilio rubbed his neck; it seemed she really didn’t need it.
The future Mrs. Gallagher was truly full of surprises.
498 marks… Even Emilio who scored 474 marks, which was the highest in the entire capital that year, felt inferior to her.
Meanwhile back in the hall, Eliza still hadn’t given up on the matter. “Dad, Ms. Barry, Miah had to have cheated! It’s impossible for her to obtain such good results, she—”
“Enough!” Dylan’s face was flushed from anger. “Don’t you think it’s shameful enough?! Make her shut up!” he yelled at Holly.
Hearing this, Holly hurriedly puled Eliza aside.
Dylan and Grandma Sampson were currently looking at Miah with no change to the dark expressions on their faces.
“Talk. How did you get such good results?” Dylan demanded sternly.
It was clear from his tone that he also believed Miah had pulled some sort of trick.
“What do you mean how? Ms. Barry already said that the possibility of me cheating is zero!” Miah retorted.
Then turning to Ms. Barry, she asked, “Isn’t that right, Ms. Barry?”
“Indeed, it’s impossible for Miah to have cheated on the exam.”
Ms. Barry was an impartial party, which meant that Dylan’s scheme had been completely derailed.
“Everyone, something has come up within the family today. Why don’t we—” Dylan was attempting to dismiss the guests from the banquet, but he was interrupted by Miah as soon as he opened his mouth. “Wait!”
Miah stood tall, exuding confidence.
“Since the trust fund agents and Ms. Barry are already here and the results have been laid bare, today is a better day than any other for you to sign off on the inheritance contract, Father.”
“Miah, y-you!” Grandma Sampson sputtered.
Miah merely smiled calmly and continued, “Grandma Sampson was right when she said that it’d be a pity if Eliza didn’t further her studies abroad when she has such good grades.
“Then, seeing as my grades are much better than hers, isn’t it even more of a pity if I don’t get the money to study abroad?”
“H-How are they the same thing!” Grandma Sampson was so anxious that she started tapping her heel against the floor. “Eliza has always been top of her grade since she was young. You just did well on one test, how do we know if you’re really better than her at your studies!” Grandma Sampson stammered.
“Hey, Old Madam Sampson, how could you say that!”
“Yeah, Miah has a point! They’re both your granddaughters!”
“Ms. Barry has already affirmed that Miah couldn’t have cheated on the exam. You Sampsons are flagrantly playing favourites!”
It was clear from the many differing opinions of the guests that their impression of the Sampsons had taken a turn for the worse.
A man stepped forward at this time.
“Eastside University’s entrance exam is well-known all over the world as being extremely stringent.
“It’s impossible for someone to cheat on such an exam.
“It’s no wonder that Sampson Group’s capital chain ruptured so easily when the head of the company doesn’t even have this little bit of common sense and has to resort to selling his daughters to raise money!”
The hall fell silent as soon as he finished speaking.
The man who said this was none other than the person of interest who attracted everyone’s attention today.
Lawrence Gentry.
Lawrence was nearly 190 meters tall and had a broad build.
He stood out from the crowd and commanded everyone’s attention.
Dylan frowned. “What do you mean by that, Mr. Gentry?”
“Oh? Am I wrong?” Lawrence walked forward, separating from the crowd. “Isn’t the reason why you want Miah to marry Bobby Gallagher because of the 50 million investment that the Gallagher family has promised?”
“That is our family’s private affair, Mr. Gentry!” Dylan shot back.
Back then Jasmin had fallen out with her family in order to marry him, so he still didn’t know that Lawrence was her younger brother.
“Not when a trust fund company is involved!
“And you certainly can’t afford to violate the terms of the agreement!”
Dylan panicked.
As a businessman, he certainly knew that such financial institutions were very influential overseas.
This was especially true for a major industry player like Lawrence. One wrong move and the Sampson family would vanish in an instant.
If Bobby’s proposal gift message was a warning, then Lawrence’s words were a blatant threat!
Dylan felt utterly helpless and under such enormous pressure, he could only sign over the inheritance to Miah in public.
Elize cried as she screamed, “Dad, you can’t give it to her! You promised me that you would give it to me so so I could study abroad! What right does Miah have to it? She’s a b*tch, a useless bumpkin!”
