Chapter 28
Mariana
I had to stop thinking about Joseph being my mate. it wasn’t doing any good for myself or Alice. We had multiple jobs to do, and we couldn’t allow this to distract us. Alice couldn’t find it in her heart to forgive Joseph for all that he’s done to us. She was broken and destroyed from the inside out; she was still so weak and in recovery. She kept quiet for most of the day because she spent time resting and mourning over her mate.
I wished there was something I could do to heal her faster, but I knew it would only take time.
For the next couple of weeks, while we developed the vaccine in the Montroy research center, I was going to be working closely with Joseph. At this point, all he was to me was a business partner.
“Hello, miss Anna,” Aiden said as I was beginning to walk into the bank for the day.
“Oh,” I said, startled. “Hey, Aiden. What can I do for you?”
I looked at the familiar car he was standing nearby, and I had to keep from rolling my eyes. Now that Alice had returned to me and recognized Joseph as our mate, she can sense him easily. I knew right away that he was sitting in the car.
“I have something that was discovered last night, I think you should have it,” Aiden said. He handed me an envelope.
I frowned as I tore open the envelope.
As I read through it, I nearly fainted on the spot. It was a disclosed agreement to terminate the vaccine production for a cost.
“Is this a bribe?” I asked, staring at him with shock.
He pointed to the envelope.
“There’s a USB in there. It shows the same people from the other videos giving this letter to one of the researchers,” Aiden explained.
Emily and Cher; of course, they were trying to ruin the research we’ve been doing. I just didn’t understand why.
“Thank you, Aiden,” I said to him with a forced smile. “But may I ask why you are helping me once again?”
He laughed nervously.
“I didn’t really do anything,” he said sheepishly, rubbing the back of his neck with the palm of his hand. “Actually, I’m more of the errand boy.”
“What?” I asked, puzzled.
“There’s someone else who’s really been helping you,” he answered. “I’m sure you know exactly who I’m talking about. But if I say any names, it could cost me my job.” He turned to walk back towards the waiting car.
I stood and watched him go in silence.
“You stupid bitch!” Emily hissed; she was red in the face and filled with fury.
I almost forgot what it was like to have a wolf; Alice was starting to grow apprehensive and angry as well. I had to work hard to keep her from losing her temper. I didn’t want to lose control in front of everybody..
The police were dragging her out of the bank. I called another meeting with the shareholders and showed them the new footage of Emily and Cher bribing a researcher.
They were also in the middle of cuffing Cher and dragging him out as well. As soon as the shareholders saw the video I displayed for them, they were quick to call the police to deal with the situation right now.
“You just wait,” Emily hissed. “Your good life will not last long. Just wait till I get out of jail!!”
Emily, I don’t ever want to see you again. Stay away from the bank and stay away from me,” I said calmly.
“Why you little…” she sprung free from the cop that was dragging her.
She ran towards me, but I just stood my ground. I straightened my stance and braced myself for the impact. She stretched out her hand like she was about to slap me across the face.

A broad figure stood in front of me, blocking her from reaching me. The cop grabbed her arm again and cuffed them behind her back. She struggled against them as they dragged her and Cher off the bank grounds.
I stared up at the figure in front of me. He turned slightly and I could see his face.
“Joseph?”
“I came to pick you up,” he muttered, sounding uninterested per usual. “You are wanted at the research center. They want to discuss their next phase of
action.”
