Chapter 30
Mariana
I had to excuse myself to the bathroom before I completely lost control of my wolf. My body was trembling, and I felt a wave of tears burning in the back of my eyes. I pressed my back against the bathroom wall and allowed myself to cry.
The test results from Tina were showing that she had a problem 3 years ago, but my first donation of blood fixed it almost right away. I didn’t need to continue to give her my blood for those 3 years. This was all for nothing; she’s been lying and destroying me at the same time.
I wasn’t sure how much more of this I was going to be able to take.
Joseph gave me a marriage contract 3 years ago and, in the contract, it stated that I am to give as much of my blood as I can. He agreed to marry me; he will marry me if I help him save his friend. My heart ached at the memory; it was so stupid. I shouldn’t have signed something like that.
I could feel the sorrow Alice was feeling; she felt so broken.
I sniffled and wiped my swollen and red eyes with the back of my sleeve. I stared at myself in the mirror and my face hardened.
“I will never forgive him,” I said with my voice being cold and calm.
“Why am I feeling such a strong intensity for her,” Joseph asked his wolf.
Anna had just returned from the bathroom. She gave him a plastered smile as she sat down beside him.
She continued her work without saying anything.
“It’s because we recognize her as our mate,” James said in return.
That wasn’t something Joseph was willing to come to terms with though. She’s obviously not the same person he married and the fact that she was so well put together was confusing for him. It gave him a weird feeling in his chest that he’s never had before.
He decided to push the thought out of his mind and continue his work just as she was. As his father always said, “There’s nothing more important than work.”
Aiden met him out front with the car; Joseph paid him no attention. Anna walked out of the building shortly after him and he rolled down the window to speak with her.
“Get in,” Joseph said. “We’ll take you home.”
She narrowed her eyes at him, and her frown deepened.
“I have a ride coming,” she said.
She sounded cold, and he could tell her jaw was clenched. She’s usually closed off and distant around him, but she’s, even more, today for some reason. She peeled her eyes away from him and turned away, refusing to look at him.
He frowned; his heart weighed heavy in his chest as he stared around her radiant features. They were practically glowing. Thinking more about it, it seemed like she was always glowing every time he sees her around. He can always pick her out of the crowd not just by her scent, but by her glow as well.
“Make her get in,” James whined.
Joseph ignored his wolf and rolled his window back up.
“What are you doing?!” James asked, angrily.
“Enough,” Joseph said in a low and threatening tone.
The car began speeding away and the further they got from Anna the more his heart tugged at him painfully. He physically held onto his chest and took in a deep breath, blaming it on indigestion. The car reached his house quickly and Joseph went straight to his home office.
He was doing some last–minute work when Aiden appeared at his doorway with a tray of dinner.
