Chapter 5
Elara’s POV
I slowly open my eyes and immediately groan when I try to move. I look around the room then at my clothes. I am in a hospital gown with tubes connected to my body and machines beeping around me.
I am able to sit up despite my body hurting.
“Please be careful, you need to rest.” I turn to meet a woman in a white coat.
“My baby?” I ask, my voice cracking at the word ‘baby: Dread fills my bones when the doctor shakes her head with a sympathetic look.
“I am sorry, we couldn’t save the child“.
I feel the tears stream down my cheeks. I hold my head in my hands and cry. I have lost my child because of Lucian, my baby is dead because of him.
“W–where is he?” I look at the doctor who is trying to comfort me. She seems to realize who I am talking about, that is why she has that conflicted look.
“He is with the Luna right now,” She finally says. “Luna has finally recovered and the Alpha is with her“.
I do not say anything for a moment. “Did he visit me even once?”
No answer.
My eyes are empty, just like my heart. I look up at the doctor with a determined look.
“Please help me, I have to leave this pack.”
The doctor doesn’t agree with the idea at first. She says that I’m not fit enough to go anywhere–let alone run away from the pack. She urges me to think hard about this decision, warning that my life won’t be safe outside the borders. But I know my life isn’t safe here either. I have to leave.
If my theory is correct, Liora is the one who poisoned herself to frame me. If she can do that then she can do anything- I have no one here. Not even my father, my only blood relation, has seen me ever since I lost the title of Luna.
“Wear this and go through the back door, there are guards at the front so be careful” Alice, the doctor, push the clothes into my arms. It is a nurse uniform with a mask.
I look at her, grateful but surprised at why she is doing this.
“Four years ago before you became Luna” She explains when she notices what I am going to ask. “My brother needed an emergency surgery and I didn’t have any money at that time, I had no one to go to and no one to help me. You were there working at the hospital- you told them when they were about to discharge my brother, you said you would do the surgery and they should deduct it out of your paycheck” She holds my hand as my eyes widens in realization.
“If it weren’t for you, I would have lost him and I wouldn’t have been where I am today, Luna.”
“I am not-”
“You are the rightful Luna in my eyes, Alpha Lucian doesn’t know what he has lost“.
She brings me into a hug as tears fall from my eyes, I am crying but not from the hurt anymore. I needed to hear that, those words are the reason I am crying.
Every step I take is pure agony. I keep my head down as I move past people. There are guard stations everywhere. I don’t know if it is because of me- a deemed criminal or because of Liora.
When I see the exit, I feel a spark of hope in me. Just a couple of steps more and I will be out of the hospital. Just as I am about to move towards the exit, I stop as my body collides with someone.
I freeze to see Elijah, Lucian’s beta in front of me. “Are you okay ma’am?” He is about to come closer but I move back and nod my head. Oh Moon Goddess please help me.
I pray, feeling his gaze on me. He is about to come closer and say something but a noise echoes through the hallway.
“She has escaped, the criminal has escaped!” I feel all my strength go away but just as I expect Elijah to realize who I am, instead he dashes to the

direction of the voice.

I can hear the sounds of my feet as I run with no sense of direction. I am no longer in the borders of Moonfang pack and every step I take away from the pack has my heart shattering into pieces.
“She is there!“.
“Don’t let her escape, the Alpha wants her alive“.
I run faster using all the remaining strength I have to run. Oh Goddess, They’ve found me. I glance back to see Elijah leading a group of men in a chase. They are all in their wolf form except Elijah. I know I will soon be caught but I have to keep running.
My body begins to give up and just before I can realize anything, I scream loudly as I step in a trap. The sharp mental pierce my feet and I fall to the ground as I bleed. I shake my head to stop myself from crying. Using my hand for support, I begin to crawl away from the group behind me, despite feeling my consciousness slipping away with each passing second.
“Elara!” I feel hands grip me forcing me to stop. Elijah has his eyes on me, watching my leg with a frown. “You are injured, let’s go back“.
“Please” I plead, shaking my head. “Please just let me go, Lucian doesn’t have to know, please!”
“I can’t disobey the Alpha’s order” He states with a serious face. He is about to lift me up but I keep on resisting. If I go back, I will face a harsh punishment or worse, death.
I shove him away with all the strength I can muster but that isn’t enough to deter him. He grips me tightly and tries to carry me into his arms but before any of us can realize what is happening, Elijah is sent flying away from me.
In a blur of motion, a figure stands in front of me, between me and the others. I can’t see his face but from his back alone, I can feel the power radiating from him.
“Hands off her” The stranger commands, making everyone back away.
There is a moment of silence as the air thickens with tension.
“Alpha Damien” Elijah speaks up, his eyes fill with fear and hate. “This has nothing to do with you, she is from the Moonfang pack so please do not get involved“.
My eyes go wide in shock when I hear that name. Alpha Damien, the Alpha of
Crimson Shadow pack, our rival pack.
I hiss in pain as my leg throb painfully. I am slowly losing my consciousness but strangely the scent of this stranger makes me feel safe, like everything is going to be okay.
“I don’t care if she is from your pack, I have the right to get involved” The Alpha growled.
“She is a criminal, Alpha Damien. Stand back and do not get involved” Elijah warns again.
“Is that so?” He lets out a slow, almost lazy drawl as he speaks his next words. “Well, I couldn’t care less… because she is my mate.”
Gasps fill the air and my vision blurs, the world tilts around me. Mate? No, that’s impossible. It has to be impossible. Yet, just as my eyes begin to close, a faint voice, fragile and distant, whispers weakly in my head as darkness envelops me.
“Mate“.
