Chapter 11  Chapter 11  I turned around and bumped right into Alaric, who had come looking for me, “Sera, why aren’t you inside yet?” When he saw Luca behind me, Alaric’s expression instantly turned cold, “Luca, Sera is my mate now. Stay the hell away from her.” Luca seemed to find an outlet for his rage, lunging forward to fight Alaric. “What makes you think you’re any better? If you hadn’t spread false leads everywhere, I would’ve found Serà ages ago.” “And she never would’ve fallen for your bullshit!” They exchanged brutal blows. Alaric had spent the night channeling his healing powers to the Moon Goddess for two critical patients and was no match for Luca’s fury. Seeing Alaric getting more and more battered, I threw myself between them to protect him. Seeing me, Luca’s fist veered off course, slamming into the ground instead as he looked at me with wounded eyes. “Sera, you’d rather protect him than me?” “Baby, are you okay? Shit, I’m sorry–I shouldn’t have lost it in front of you.” Alaric was full of regret, pulling me close to check for injuries, clearly shaken. Luca stood up, roughly wiping blood from the corner of his mouth. “Alaric, if you’re a real man, stop hiding behind Sera.” “Winner takes all. Whoever wins gets her.” Alaric took my hand and shook his head, addressing Luca directly. “Luca, I won’t fight you, and Sera isn’t some prize to be won.” “You grew up with her, but you used her feelings to abuse her. You brought this on yourself.” “Even if Sera doesn’t choose me, she’ll never choose you!” Hit where it hurt most, Luca exploded with rage. “Impossible! We had ten years together, we have a pup…” Luca roared, refusing to accept reality, but stopped mid–sentence when he mentioned the pup. That pup was gone. Maybe Sera really would never forgive him… “Daddy!” “Mama!” A sweet voice called from behind us. I turned to see Celeste toddling over, looking upset. “Mama, up!” A smile crossed my face.  Chapter 11  “Of course, sweetie. Did you get worried waiting? Mama’s sorry I’ll be right there,”  Alaric grinned despite his injuries. “Come to Daddy, little girl. Mama’s tired.” Celeste turned away from Alaric stubbornly, but after two seconds couldn’t help but blow gently on his wounds. “Daddy, make hurt go bye–bye.” Luca stared at Celeste’s face in shock, then broke into tears of joy. “Sera, this is our pup, isn’t it? He didn’t die, right?” “Thank the Moon Goddess, you lied to me back then. Our pup is alive–we can fix this.” “Once he knows I’m his real dad, you can’t leave me, Sera!” “Come here, daughter. Let Daddy hold you.” Seeing new hope, Luca opened his arms to embrace Celeste. I handed Celeste to Alaric and coldly blocked Luca’s path. “Luca, you are not this pup’s father.” “Your daughter is dead. You killed him yourself when you ripped out that plug.”

He’d lost a lot of weight, dark circles under his eyes. “Sera, I finally found you!” Laica’s eyes were bloodshot, his voice trembling. “Sera, I fucked up. Please, please… just come back with me.” He reached out to embrace me, but I stepped back. “Sera, I just… I just lost my mind for a moment. All men make this kind of mistake.” “Tomorrow is our ten year anniversary. Can you really bear to throw away everything we had?” He pulled out a ring, kneeling on the ground, trying to grab my hand. I felt nothing but disgust. Luca took my silence as softening, attempting to slide the ring onto my finger when suddenly Ash appeared from nowhere and snatched it away. “Luca, why can’t you forget this bitch? This was supposed to be my engagement ring/ “Is your human side affecting you again?” “Don’t worry, I’ll find a way to kill that human personality and bring Lynx back to me.” Ash cupped Luca’s face, her voice fierce with determination. I watched this scene coldly, unable to suppress a mocking laugh. “What’s wrong, Luca? Haven’t you told her the truth yet?” “What truth?” Ash positioned herself protectively in front of Luca, eyeing me suspiciously. “Get away from me!” Luca shoved Ash aside roughly, his face pale as he looked at me./ “Sera, lot me explain. When you were pregnant, I was anxious, under so much pressure, and then I…” “And then you decided to get your rocks off by pretending your wolf was out of control so you could fuck around?” “Because you were bored, you thought it was okay to hurt me? To hurt our pup?” I finished what Luca couldn’t bring himself to say. The hatred I’d buried deep inside came surging up. “Your uncontrolled wolf was bullshit? All of it was fake?” “I was just some sex toy for you?! Luca, tell me she’s lying!” Ash stood frozen in place, refusing to believe it, desperately seeking one last shred of hope from Luca. “Yes. I never loved you. You were just a good pussy to me, nothing more.” “Get the hell away from me!” Ash was shoved to the ground, suddenly clutching her belly as she sat there laughing and crying hysterically, Chapter 10  But Luca paid her no attention. He crawled on his knees toward me, grabbing at my dress. “Sera, let me explain. It’s not what you think.” “I did want some fresh at first, but later, I was afraid you’d get bored with me too, so…” So he used the fake disorder as an excuse to hurt me repeatedly, testing the depth of my love for him. I understood what Luca couldn’t finish saying, and found it pathetically absurd. I wiped the tears from my eyes and glared at him with hatred. “Luca, you’re a piece of shit. You disgust me.” I lifted the fabric covering my prosthetics, my voice dripping with venom. “Luca, what fucking right do you have to ask for my forgiveness?” Looking at those artificial legs, Luca’s lips trembled. He couldn’t say a word, didn’t even dare reach out to touch them.  “Fuck off and die. I hope I never see your pathetic face again.”

Chapter 9  At the dinner table, every dish was something I loved. Even the after–dinner fruit was my favorite–strawberries. He never got it wrong, not once. I looked at Alaric and suddenly spoke up. “Our pup still doesn’t have a proper name. Do you have any ideas?”  Alaric immediately perked up with interest. “How about Celeste? It means ‘heavenly‘ and ‘of the stars.“” “Or maybe Seraphina–‘fiery angel‘ and ‘divine messenger.“” “There’s also Aurora, Iris…” For every name Alaric suggested, he explained its beautiful meaning. He truly saw our pup as his own daughter. A smile crept into my eyes. “Alright then. Our pup’s full name will be Celeste Hawke.” “Perfect, Celeste-” Alaric suddenly froze. Then his eyes turned red as tears began streaming down his face, his voice trembling. “Hawke? Sera, are you saying yes?”  “Hey, come on, don’t cry. This is happy news, silly.” I frantically searched for tissues to wipe his tears. Love breeds love in return. Alaric’s devotion was everywhere, and/unlike with Luca, my heart was responding. Alaric pulled me into his arms excitedly. “Thank you, Sera. Thank you for giving me this chance.” Warm tears fell onto my neck. I wrapped my arms around him. “Alaric, I’ll work to heal from the shadows, and then… I’ll love you properly.” I couldn’t let one worthless bastard stop me from moving forward. My heart sank. Was he going to doubt me too? “Sera, give me your hand.” Confused, I held out my hand. The next second, Alaric guided my palm across the nurse’s face in a sharp slap. “Now you’ve actually been hit.” As everyone stared in shock, Alaric protectively led me away. “Your hand’s all red. Did that hurt? My fault–I should have gotten you gloves first.” He gently massaged my slightly reddened palm, his eyes full of concern. Warmth spread through my chest as I asked worriedly. “Thank you, but… won’t you get in trouble for this?” Alaric flexed his healing hands with a smug grin. “You know what they call me? The pack’s miracle healer and The Moon Goddess’s Favorite. They wouldn’t dare cross me.” “Don’t worry. I know you didn’t do anything wrong. We’ll find the evidence and clear your name.” Everything happened exactly as Alaric predicted. The medical center found the proof they needed. The nurse was expelled, and the pack council issued a public apology to me. Luca staggered backward. “Fuck… Sera was right. I called her a liar when she was telling the truth. I swore I’d always trust her.” His body shook as tears streamed down his face. “Don’t break down yet. This is only the first gift.” His beta looks like he wanted to shake some sense into him and couldn’t help mocking him. “Luca, you brought this shit on yourself! I warned you, but you wouldn’t listen. Since you made this mess, see it through like an ALPHA. Don’t be a chicken now.” The second gift was at the nursery. Luca didn’t understand at first, not until he saw the empty incubator. “My pup? Where the hell is my daughter?”  He grabbed a passing doctor by the scrubs, frantically demanding answers. The doctor looked at him with cold contempt. “That pup was born weak. The second day, she could barely breathe–nearly died.” Luca remembered that day. He’d been with Ash, annoyed when I came to him about our pup’s condition. He’d had me thrown out, telling me that if I couldn’t even keep a pup alive, maybe it was better off dead. “Thanks to her mother’s constant care, the little one pulled through.” “It was a miracle, really. But when you unplugged that machine, the miracle ended.” “You’ll never see your daughter again.” All color drained from Luca’s face. When he came to, both his human side and wolf felt completely hollow. “Tell me. What’s the third thing Sera left me? I can handle it.” His beta hesitated, his fingers twitching several times before finally pulling out the hand severance documents  “Luna said she never wants anything to do with you again. Ever.” The papers were torn to shreds. Luca thought he could take anything, but my last gift completely broke whatever was left of him. Chapter 5 The next second, Luca burst through the door and saw the scene before him, his eyes blazing with fury. “Ash, don’t be scared. I’m getting the healer–you’re gonna be okay.” “I love you, Lynx,” she whispered weakly. As I screamed in horror, he yanked out the power cord. “No! Luca, he’s premature–he’s already so weak! You’ll kill him! She’s your daughter too!” “Take your anger out on me, not him! Please, I’m begging you!” I sobbed hysterically, banging my head against the floor as I begged. With shaking hands, I plugged the incubator back in. But my pup never moved again. Three hours later, I boarded a plane out of the territory. Luca’s whole body going rigid. But I was too drained to love anyone anymore. Chapter 3  In my dreams, I returned to when Luca and I were truly in love. How could I forget? When I’d called Ash a homewrecker, Luca had rogues assault me as punishment. I’d knelt on the pack house steps, bowing a hundred times, calling myself a worthless bitch over and over until Luca was satisfied. I’d seen him carry Ash back to her room last night to tend her wounds. But he’d never admit it. He’d just make it worse. Bones snapped one by one until I couldn’t take anymore. “Luca, I was wrong! I shouldn’t have made her kneel. I didn’t know she was pregnant–please stop!” I looked up desperately, but he kicked me hard in the stomach. Luca snarled with disgust. “Bullshit. You’ve whelped before–don’t tell me you couldn’t smell another omega’s pregnancy.” My wounds tore open again, and suddenly I had no fight left. The Luca who once trusted me completely was gone. Even if I cut out my heart to prove my innocence, he wouldn’t believe me now. As consciousness faded, Luca finally signaled the enforcers to stop. “Maybe this’ll teach you some respect. You stay here and think about what you did. I’ll send the pack healer in three hours” I collapsed in the pack medical center’s cold hallway as hostile stares burned into me. “Disgusting! Serves her right–homewrecking bitch!” “They’re such a perfect match. He’s so good to his omega, even got her that whole territory when she got pregnant.” I lay numb as they spat on me, kicked me. They didn’t know I was Luca’s true mate. That island was where we’d completed our bond. He’d promised to take our pup there someday to show him where his parents his parents first became one. Now, staring at my shattered legs, my wolf whimpered and retreated so deep I could barely feel her. Three hours passed. No healer came. I dragged myself to find Luca. He sat by Ash’s bed, carefully cutting moon cakes for her. “Lynx, don’t cut the moon cakes! Cutting them means the Moon Goddess will separate us.” Ash pouted and pushed the plate away. Luca laughed apologetically. “You’re right, baby. My mistake.” But he used to tell me different. “Sera, that’s just old wives‘ tales. The Moon Goddess blessed our bond–watch this.” Luca had fed me pieces of cut moon cake with his own hands during our first full moon together. “If cutting moon cakes means separation, then sharing these proves we’re meant to be together forever.” Today, those words felt like a cruel joke. I pulled myself back to the present and looked at him with dead calm. “I, Seraphina Blaire, reject you, Luca Helstone, as my mate.”

When I woke up, I was in the pack’s medical facility. My hand flew to my deflated belly, panic setting in immediately. “My pup–how’s my pup?”  A nurse gently restrained me, her voice soothing. “Easy, easy. You’re injured and weak from the birth. You need rest. The pup’s in the incubator–she’ll be okay.” Something in her tone made my stomach drop. Meeting my eyes, she sighed reluctantly. “The pup came early and suffered trauma in the womb. She’s not as strong as other newborns. It’ll take careful nurturing.” Relief flooded through me. I could handle that–I’d make sure my pup thrived. After thanking the nurse, Luca walked in. He helped me sit up, eyes full of concern. “My sweet girl, you were so brave bringing our little girl into the world.” “I stopped by Sweet Moon Bakery and got your favorite–blueberry cheesecake. Want some?” Sweet Moon was on the opposite side of pack territory from the medical center. He’d gone out of his way. Except my favorite was strawberry cheesecake. Ash was the one who loved blueberry. When I didn’t respond, Luca pulled me into his arms. “Baby, I’m so sorry. Lynx only lets me take control when you’re really hurt. I hate that I failed to protect you.” Luca slapped himself hard across the face, again and again, not caring how he’d look at tomorrow’s pack meeting. Before, I would have stopped him, held his hands, told him it wasn’t his fault. Now his act just seemed ridiculous. “Bring in Ash Winterborne.” Ash limped in, feet swollen, glaring daggers at me. Luca kicked her legs out from under her, forcing her to her knees. “You’re lucky Sera’s alive, or your miserable life wouldn’t be enough to pay for what you did.” “Keep staring at my Luna like that and you’ll spend the night kneeling in the hallway.” Such a light punishment. I felt nothing but exhaustion. Lying back, tears pricked my eyes as I asked what needed to know. “Luca, do you really love me? Are you keeping something from me?”  He stroked my hair with a gentle smile. “Baby, of course I love you. Why do you think I fought Lynx so hard to get you to safety?” His voice grew cautious, “What makes you think I’m hiding anything?”  I felt him watching for my reaction. “Nothing. Just wondering.” “Come on, sweetheart, We’ve been childhood sweethearts for ten years, with a decade of love, Don’t overthink it, ok? Just focus on getinte bett. “Ill find a way to control my wolf.” Luca relaxed and headed for the door. Passing Ash’s room, I saw light spilling out. Luca knelt on her bed, massaging her legs while whispering sweet reassurances. Always so thorough, he’d probably told her that “Luca broke through Lynx’s control.” I looked away and continued to the nursery.
