When Lena woke up again, she was already in the hospital.
“Your right hand’s badly injured,” the doctor came over with a serious expression. “You may end up with long–term complications.”
Her heart dropped.
She tried to sit up, but the pain from her right arm was so sharp it jolted her fully awake. The memory of what happened before she blacked out hit her like a punch to the gut.
With a scratchy voice, she asked, “What kind of complications?”
The doctor replied, “You might experience reduced grip strength, stiffness, and trouble with fine motor skills. Right now, focus on recovery. We’ll monitor your condition over time.”
It sounded gentle enough–complications—but let’s be honest. Her hand was basically ruined. The doctor clearly had nothing else to offer, so he just looked down and left the room.
Lena’s face turned ghostly pale. Her eyes lost focus.
She lifted her right hand, which was completely wrapped in a cast. Besides the pain, she couldn’t feel anything else.
“Why?” The pain in her chest was unbearable.
She buried her face in the blanket, biting down hard on her lip to stifle the sobs. But she couldn’t stop the tears from soaking her pillow.
She cried for a long time before finally calming down.

Later, she quietly ate her dinner. On the surface, she looked composed, but her eyes were completely blank–she seemed like a shell of herself.
When she was done eating, she needed to use the bathroom. But with her hand out of commission, she had to ask a nurse for help. The nurse, a little surprised, asked gently, “Your hand’s in bad shape. Isn’t anyone from your family here to take care of you?”
Lena froze for a second. Sadness flickered in her eyes. “I don’t have any family,” she said softly.
Her mom had passed away. As for Kevin–her husband in name only–he might as well be dead to her now, too.
Actually, he probably had already forgotten all about her.
“That’s rough,” the nurse sighed from the hallway, genuinely sympathetic. “A woman needs someone to lean on. If you find a good man, you’re set for life.” She added, “Like that girl Zoey who came in earlier.”
When she brought up that name, her voice got louder. “She just had a small cut on her palm–barely needed anything–but her boyfriend freaked out. Called in the top orthopedic specialist and triple–checked everything just to make sure she was fine.
“Now that’s what I call a good man.”
Lena grabbed onto the wall, forcing herself to stay upright. But inside, all the hurt and humiliation boiled up again, and her eyes welled with tears.
So Zoey’s hand was fine all along?
And yet she–she had to pay for it with something she might never get back.

pick her up. But not to take her home. Instead, he brought her to an upscale private club–for Zoey’s birthday party.
“What the hell is this?” Lena snapped, furious.

Kevin didn’t even look fazed. With that same smug attitude, he said, “Zoey’s not mad at you anymore. I think it’s time you two put this behind you.”
Then he walked straight over to Zoey and handed her a necklace, his voice dripping with affection. “Happy birthday, Zoey.”
Lena recognized that necklace immediately.
It was a royal piece from the British crown’s private collection. She had once laid eyes on it and instantly fell in love–but Kevin told her it was for display only, not for sale.

Now, she was just the punchline to someone else’s joke. Zoey’s eyes lit up the moment she saw it. She beamed at Kevin and said sweetly, “Can you help me put it on?”
“Of course,” he said with a smile. He placed the necklace around her neck, and the guests around them cheered. The two of them looked like a couple deep in love.
Lena turned and walked out, holding back her tears. She stayed outside for a long time before heading back in. But as she passed one of the private rooms, she suddenly stopped.
Through the crack in the door, she caught a glimpse of two bodies tangled together. The man let out a low groan as the woman arched her back in
response.
And that face was Zoey.

Lena stood frozen. Right then, a voice sounded behind her. “What are you doing out here?”
She spun around, startled.
It was Kevin.
